“Who wrote the laws saying that doorways must be sealed? Who told you to create another one of you?”

“The church.”

“Why?” He was silent. For once, he had no answer. He merely stared at me not blinking or unwavering as his eyes locked on mine. I thought I had him; nowhere in the Bible did it say to interfere with the dead or the other side. In fact, the Scripture scorned it. If I remembered correctly, that would border on witchcraft and necromancy, which was forbidden. So, if Wilson were the type to follow the Bible no matter what, then these questions just pushed his logic out the window. Even if the church said he had to do those things, who was to say they were right?

My Review: Surviving Amber Springs by Siobhan Davis

d3167-surviving-amber-springsLet him who is without sin cast the first stone… I’m the second-most hated person in Amber Springs.

First place honors go to my twin, Ethan; however, hate isn’t a strong enough word to convey how people feel about him.

Not that I blame anyone—some days, I hate him too. Mostly, I’m just lost and afraid, drowning in a sea of betrayal and guilt, wondering how this happened right under my nose.

There’s no choice but to leave. To move clear across the country in a last-ditch attempt to start over.

Transferring to a new school midway through senior year is hellish for most people. For me, it’s a welcome relief—until someone discovers our secret and now everyone knows.

The pointing, whispering, and scathing looks follow me around again, and I’m back to square one. Except, this time, I’m not alone.

Axel, Skeet, and Heath took me under their wing from the minute I arrived here. I’ve no idea why three of the hottest guys in town took any interest in me or why they continue to have my back, but I’m so grateful to have them in my corner.

Because, right now, they’re the only reason I’m not following my brother into an early grave.

This is an upper YA/NA STANDALONE #whychoose contemporary romance. Due to sensitive content and possible triggers, this book is recommended to readers aged eighteen and older. Please refer to the note at the start of the book. This is a full length novel.

My Review:

How to write a review about a book the touches your heart so deeply? Or a review of a book that you would like to get on your rooftop and announce to all those within earshot that they MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! One other book of Siobhan’s affected me this powerfully, and that was Inseparable. I mean, don’t get me wrong, ALL of Siobhan’s book affect us powerfully in one way or another, and to one degree or another! But Inseparable and now Surviving Amber Springs, they Knocked me off my feet. Once i get my bearings again, then all i want to do is announce to the world how amazing the book is!!!

Blaire has been through the most traumatic experience a person can go through. She’s moved and is trying to move on with her life. Meeting Skeet, Axel and Heath was the absolute best thing that ever happened to her. I don’t want to go on any further and ruin the book for anyone. But I will say, with Axel, Heath & Skeet you really have your choice of great book boyfriends. My favorite being Axel. 🖤

This is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year! It is an AMAZING book! I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! All the stars in the world for this one!!! ALL OF THEM!!!!!!

Dakota’s dreams of attending Juilliard were shattered the night tragedy struck her family. It’s one year later, and she’s now enrolled at a local university trying to piece her life back together.

Shawn is one of the world’s most famous faces, having lived under a spotlight since his star exploded when he was fourteen. Now jaded by an industry forcing him to perform music he no longer enjoys, he craves normalcy and the opportunity to rediscover his muse. Romance is the last thing on Dakota’s mind, but after she crosses paths with a hot, prickly cutie with rock-hard abs and smoldering good looks, she can’t shake him from her thoughts.

Shawn can’t afford to bring any girl into his fucked-up life, but the gorgeous blonde with the sad blue eyes captivates him in a way no girl ever has, and he finds himself falling hard and fast.

But outside forces are conspiring against them.

When danger draws closer, and secrets are revealed, will their love survive?

MY REVIEW

I love books with really complex characters and very emotional storylines. In fact, I am extremely character driven when I read. That being said, this was the book for me. In fact, this is Siobhan’s second standalone and they’ve both been my kind of books!! The first one being one of my very favorite books, Inseparable. In fact, as a quick side note, some of the characters from Inseparable make a showing in this book. That was very exciting for me!

As for these two MCs, Shawn and Dakota, they are both very complex characters. Dakota growing up in a normal, happy family life until tragedy strikes and changes her life forever. Shawn entering the entertainment business as a young teenager and living on the edge as one of LA’s biggest Rock Stars. They both had baggage.

When Shawn gets his life threatened he goes into hiding at Tippie College of Business, where he meets Dakota. Of course he has changed his look and his name, so no one knows who he is. He goes there with the intention of staying away from girls. And Dakota wants nothing to do with dating, because of a bad breakup. So I wouldn’t call this any kind of Insta love, I feel it really was more of a slow buildup. They were so sweet together, so romantic, and very sexy! They were so good for each other, they were like puzzle pieces that fit together. Even though they were different in many ways, those differences are what made them good for each other.

At the same time, Shawn had hired a detective agency to find the people who were threatening his life. So it was a suspense and little bit of a mystery too. That really added to the story. The main part was the romance, but it all tied together. It got very suspenseful too!!

I have to mention too that I loved some of the side characters!! Especially Dakota’s friends, they were so great and the best of friends!! Tabs (Or Tabitha) cracked me up!! Daisy was so sweet and kind of looked out for Dakota. She just had really great friends.

As a whole this was definitely a brilliant read. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it!

The whole stethoscope-and-white coat thing isn’t my cup of tea.

I prefer a man with an artistic vein in his body. 9 – 5 hours. And I can definitely do without the half-lidded, sleepy bedroom eyes. (Okay, so those are kind of sexy.)

Tall, dark, and handsome doesn’t change the fact that he’s arrogant, cocky, and rude.

Not that I care, but he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with a quirky girl like me, which is why he said no.

Turns out no isn’t an option.

I have a quickie wedding to plan, and Dr. Jake Kissinger doesn’t have a choice. He looks at our situation like he’s stuck with me, but in reality I’m stuck with him. Stuck with his pouty mouth. His long, lean body. And stuck with those loose, low riding scrub pants. (Okay, so the doctor thing is growing on me.)

When spending time together turns into more than it should, I know I’m in trouble.

He isn’t supposed to make my heart pound.

I’m not supposed to make him look twice.

And we aren’t supposed to spend the night together. (Okay, so he has more than one artistic vein in his body, and other places.)

Falling for him is definitely a mistake.

Here’s the thing…

Jake is unavailable, and I know it.
Just not in the way you might think.

I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

EXCERPT:

THE THING ABOUT LOVE
By Kim Karr
Copyright 2017

If a barn could be magical, this one was definitely enchanting.

I was in a daze as I looked around. The rafters. The tables. The river. They all seemed to sparkle with a light I wanted to capture.

“Isn’t that right, sweetie?” The voice was deep and husky, but I was in my own world imaging what I could do with a place like this and not paying any attention.

An elbow nudged me, and it wasn’t until then that I realized I was sweetie.

Sweetie?

Seriously, the man with the DR before his name couldn’t find something a little sexier in his vocabulary to call me? Sugarcakes. Honeypie. Cookie, even.

“What’s that Chocolate Cake?” I smiled big and wide when I said it. Obviously, he was giving this little show all he had, so I figured I might as well, too.

Ignoring my taunt, Jake draped an arm around my chair just as Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” came bellowing through the speakers.

When his fingertips brushed my shoulder, I wasn’t listening to the beat of the music though because butterflies took flight in my belly, and lower. I had to remind myself that this was part of the show, but still, I found myself having to squeeze my thighs together to sooth the ache his touch had ignited.

“I was just telling George how much you love to dance. Especially square dance,” he said.

I had been reaching for my water, and I practically spilled it when he said that. Was he out of his ever-loving mind? I didn’t know a thing about country dancing other than the fact that the word do-si-do had something to do with it.

I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. “Yes, big boy, I do like to dance, but you know I prefer to watch you line dance because you’re so great at it. Besides, don’t forget, I did hurt my ankle not that long ago.”

His grin was beyond wicked. “You can be a klutz sometimes, but I seem to recall you assuring me your ankle was absolutely fine, and after I checked it out, I did concur with your self-diagnosis.”

Ethel tapped George on the shoulder, and when he looked at her, she whispered something in his ear.

“Did you say you wanted to dance, Jules?” George asked me over the music.

Before I could say no, George was on his feet and standing beside me with his hand extended. “Would you do me the honor of having this dance with me?”

Like I could say no now.

He really was so sweet. Dr. Kiss, on the other hand, well he was the devil reincarnated. “I’d be delighted,” I said and glared at Jake as I stood.

“Have fun, Sweetie,” Jake grinned.

I bent to whisper in his ear. “While I’m gone, do you think you could come up with something to call me that doesn’t make you sound like you might be George’s age.”

He narrowed that blue-eyed stare at me.

Satisfied with that, I pivoted around and didn’t look back.

The bridesmaids, in their short, peach dresses and cowboy boots, were having a blast stomping their feet and clapping their hands all while shaking their behinds and pressing their thumbs into their sides.

How on earth were George and I going to dance to this?

Thank God just when we reached the center of the dance floor, the music changed, and Tim McGraw’s voice came overhead. As Tim sang about how no one ever made him feel the way she did, George and I stepped into position.

He took my hands and started to move, ballroom style. This type of dancing I knew how to do. “So,” he said, “When are you and Jake planning on getting hitched?”

Up until now, I had been able to twist what I said so it didn’t sound like a blatant lie, but this question was pretty straightforward. “We haven’t decided yet.”

Which was true. In fact, we hadn’t decided a lot. Like as a starting point, if we were friends or enemies.

“I noticed you ain’t wearing a ring. He not gotten you one yet?”

“That’s complicated,” I answered.

And it was. He hadn’t gotten me one and he never would because he didn’t even like me, and after tonight, I was fairly certain he wouldn’t be able to stand me.

“Well, he’s a good man. Give him some time. He’ll come around.”

Yes, he’d come around all right. Come around to telling me I was fired, which reminded me of Finn.

Where had he gotten his information?

I leaned back. “Is Labor Day weekend available for a wedding?”

George started to laugh. “You’ll give the man a heart attack if you make him move that fast.”

“Oh, I know, but just in case, is it?”

“As a matter of fact, it might be. A lad called here today inquiring about it though, and I told him to come up and see the place before I reserved it for him. Since he ain’t shown, I reckon it could be yours.”

“Good to know.” I winked.

He raised a curious brow.

I shrugged. “Just in case.”

Yes, just in case I decided to come clean. And just in case I could figure out how this place was suitable for Rory. But even as I thought it, I knew it wasn’t.

I nearly missed a step when I caught a glimpse of Jake leaning against the wall, watching us.

He threw me off, and I had to order myself to tune back into George for the remainder of the dance. My lack of focus had to cease right now because the bottom line was that at the moment I couldn’t allow myself to be thrown off course.

When the music ended, I stepped back and curtsied.

“Thanks for indulging me.” George gave my hand a squeeze. “You and the Doc are really quite a couple.”

“Thank you,” I told him, but I knew I should have been correcting him instead. I hated the lie, but I couldn’t undo it now, nor could I stop what he was doing. George had signaled Jake over, and he had started to move.

All tall, dark, and handsome, he strutted my way with a cat that ate the canary grin on his face. I wanted to wipe it away—with my lips.

No, I didn’t mean that.

“It’s your turn,” George told him.

“Oh, but he only likes to line dance,” I said.

George laughed like it was a joke and strode toward his Ethel, who had started clearing the buffet table.

“May I?” Jake asked, all debonair-like.

“I don’t know, may you?”

He shook his head. “Just give me your hands, will you? I’d hate to ruin George and Ethel’s night by admitting this was all a ruse.”

“Grrr…You are so frustrating,” I said offering my hands.

He laced his fingers in mine and drew me close. “Did you just growl?”

With a frown, I placed my hands on his shoulders. “I did no such thing.”

His hands fit my waist like they were made for me. “Yes, you did. And smile, they’re looking at us.”

Forcing myself to keep the corners of my mouth tilted upwards was very difficult because I could barely breathe when he slid his thigh between mine.

The crowd surged around us, and just like that, I forgot this wasn’t real. We were aligned thigh-to-thigh, belly-to-belly. If I turned my head, our mouths would be close enough to kiss.

Silly thought.

We moved together, and when my hands slid from his shoulder to cup the back of his neck, the edges of his soft brown hair tickled my knuckles. The heat of his skin was almost too much, as was the feel of his body so close to mine.

When his fingers splayed against my back and lingered there, I could have sworn the music thumped in the pit of my stomach, my wrists, and especially between my thighs

“What are you doing?” I asked.

He moved closer to me. “I believe it’s called dancing.”

“Are you still acting? Because if you are, George and Ethel are no longer watching us.” I whispered this in his ear.

“Does it matter?” he answered back, and when he did his breath caressed my ear.

“Do you want it to?”

He pulled back to look into my eyes, his smile less bemused and his gaze bright. “Do you always answer a question with a question?”

“Only when…I’m talking to you.” My hesitation sounded coy, but I hadn’t meant it to. Scared of something, but no idea what of, I said, “This place isn’t that bad. It just needs some more sparkle.”

“Sparkle?”

“Yes, like crystal chandeliers hanging from the beams.”

He chuckled. “I don’t think crystal chandeliers are George and Ethel’s style.”

“No,” I said. “We should probably go. You were right to begin with, this place isn’t appropriate for your sister’s wedding.”

All of a sudden, the music ended, and before I could say another word, I was being pushed into a very grabby crowd of women.

Oh, no! The bouquet toss.

I had to get out of here. I bent down and crawled around, through, and practically under, a number of jumping cowboy boots.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

Rushing out of the side of the crowd, I stood up, and I could hardly believe it when the bouquet landed at my feet.

Without thinking, I picked it up to throw it back into the crowd, but it was too late.

“Oh Jules, you caught it.” It was Ethel, and she was escorting me to the front of the room. When I saw George leading Jake there as well, I wanted to end this charade.

It was too much to handle.

Having him so close was too much to handle.

He was too much to handle.

George and Ethel pushed us both together, and all of the girls started chanting, “Seal the deal. Seal the deal.”

“What are they talking about?” Jake muttered.

“Kiss her, Doc,” George clarified for me, and before either of us could step away from each other, George and Ethel were once again pushing us together.

I landed against Jake’s hard chest. My mouth flew open in surprise, and a small sigh escaped. My lips were so close to his. Tantalizingly close. I wanted to close the distance so very much.

He was breathing heavy, and I could see the muscle twitch at his temple, witness how tight his jaw was. Everything about him screamed he was holding himself back.

We were both losing that battle though.

Whether out of obligation, pressure, or need, his mouth came crashing down over mine, in the hardest, heated, and most demanding way.

Oh, God, I wanted this.

Wanted him.

Especially when his tongue pushed inward, hot and sensual. It glided over mine as he licked at the roof of my mouth and swirled around my tongue in the most erotic dance.

His lips were so soft.

His mouth so hot.

His possession unlike any I’d ever experienced.

I could hear the catcalls, but ignored them all because he wasn’t simply kissing me, he wasn’t just sealing the deal, he was devouring me.

In that moment, any other man I’d ever kissed faded away.

No one had ever kissed me this way.

Stepbrother Dearest by Penelope Ward

IMG_2764.jpg

You’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. But things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Then, just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Stepbrother Dearest is a standalone novel.

**Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+

This book really surprised me! Not because it was amazing, not because the writing was unbelievable (so far the best writing of Penelope Ward’s Books that I’ve read), and not because it’s was steamy as hell! No, the reason it surprised me is that I’m used to reading a lot of friends to lovers story with Penelope Ward. Of course, I’m playing catch up with her books. I came to discover the awesomeness of Penelope Ward, and Penelope Ward/Vi Keeland, books!!! So maybe the friends to lovers books are more her recent books. But I sat down with this book thinking it would be a light, easy read. Boy was I wrong!! But, I was also unaware that I was about to read an absolutely amazing book!!!

The story starts out as young people in high school, but in no way is it young adult reading. Elec comes to live in Greta’s home for the summer. He is the son of her mother’s husband…her stepbrother. She looks forward to the idea of having a brother, as an only child. When he walks in the door looking completely gorgeous with all his tattoos and piercings, she starts to have physical feelings that she would NOT have for a brother. She smiles warmly and says “I’m Greta. Nice to meet you.” He said nothing. Then she told him he looked different than she pictured. He squinted at her and said, “And you look pretty….plain.” Poor Greta wanted to disappear. Physically he was her dream and in every other way he was her nightmare. But there, of course, is so much more to the story. The characters in the book have SO MUCH DEPTH…ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!!

So the book does eventually jump forward to when they are adults. So much happens to Elec and Greta in their lives. There is so much unsaid. I’m always screaming at these romance books…COMMUNICATE PEOPLE!!!! But this is what makes for such angst, emotion and drama, and I love every bit of it!!!! But the beautiful characters that Penelope creates are so endearing that they become rooted in your heart and you have a hard time letting them go when you move on to another book. And, personally, I’d say that in this book it has affected more than others.

Just beautiful…

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS:

*Sigh* I just LOVED this book! It kind of had that Sweet Home Alabama vibe…you know the movie, right? With Reese Witherspoon? Well I don’t mean it was just like it, but it reminded me of it. I mean, yes, they both took place in Alabama, but it’s not just that. It’s the story of two people who fell in love young, but it fell apart and there were bitter feelings. But deep down they never really moved on, they both still belonged to one another. It’s about fate. It’s about second chances. It’s very powerful, very romantic. I would DEFINITELY say that this book is MUCH MORE romantic and emotional than Sweet Home Alabama. In a way, it’s really so much more. Like I said, it just had that vibe.

Knox and Emma Jane have so many messed up feelings and thoughts about the past. They were young and immature, and didn’t handle things well. Emma Jane ended up being a runaway bride. Eight years later and now feelings and thoughts and emotions need untangling. The love is still there, but can they get through all they need to work through and still feel the same? “Unfinished business can be tricky. ”

“Sometimes love just needs a second chance, when it wasn’t quite ready the first time around.”

Side characters: The side characters were great!
Madison – Emma Jane’s friend and fellow employer. She was such a good friend.
Becket – Emma Jane’s best friend (without benefits). Becket was a huge character and much loved! In fact, he’s getting his own book “Ditched” in early 2018 (SO EXCITED!!!) Becket helped pick Emma Jane up from day one and was her best friend from then on!
Grandpa – Emma Jane’s grandpa. He was the only family member who did not disown her for running out on her wedding. He loved Knox like a grandson and kept in touch with both. He believed they were both meant to be together, and fate would bring them together again.
Wells – Knox’s best friend. I can’t say I ever felt any fondness for Wells. But he was a loyal friend to Knox, and that says something.
These are the most prominent side characters. Of course there are others, but these are the ones you get to know the most.

I really loved this book, and I hated to see Knox and Emma Jane’s story come to an end. They are such wonderful, profoundly written characters. You can’t help but get swept up in their story and it brought me to tears several times over. I am looking forward to Becket’s story, of course, and I think I fallen in love with RC Boldt’s writing, so I will be checking out what else she has written.

By Siobhan Davis
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age category: New Adult
Release Date: 9 January, 2018

Blurb:
A gritty, angsty, friends-to-lovers standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Siobhan Davis.

A childhood promise. An unbreakable bond. One tragic event that shatters everything.

It all started with the boys next door…

Devin and Ayden were my best friends. We were practically joined at the hip since age two. When we were kids, we thought we were invincible, inseparable, that nothing or no one could come between us.

But we were naive.

Everything turned to crap our senior year of high school.

Devin was turning into a clone of his deadbeat lowlife father—fighting, getting wasted, and screwing his way through every girl in town. I’d been hiding a secret crush on him for years. Afraid to tell him how I felt in case I ruined everything. So, I kept quiet and slowly watched him self-destruct with a constant ache in my heart.

Where Devin was all brooding darkness, Ayden was the shining light. Our star quarterback with the bright future whom everyone loved. But something wasn’t right. He was so guarded, and he wouldn’t let me in.

When Devin publicly shamed me, Ayden took my side, and our awesome-threesome bond was severed. The split was devastating. The heartbreak inevitable.

Gradually, Ayden and I grew closer. We graduated and moved on with our lives, but the pain never lessened, and Devin was never far from our thoughts.

Until it all came to a head in college, and one eventful night changed everything.

Now, I’ve lost the two people who matter more to me than life itself. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Inseparable Excerpt:

Prologue

Present Day – Angelina

Life is just a flow of interconnecting moments in time. A combination of well-thought-out actions and spontaneous reactions. A sequence of events and people moving in and out of your personal stratosphere.
At least, that’s how I’ve always viewed it.
Like a squiggly line veering up and down with no apparent pattern. Plotting the highs; pinpointing the lows. Showcasing the happy times. Highlighting the mistakes and the resulting consequences. Calling into focus all the myriad of things I should’ve done differently if I had known.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the notion of time—making a beeline for the fortune tellers every year when the carnival descended on the wide, open grassy field just outside town. I saved my pocket money all year round so I could have my fortune told. The idea that you could see into the future, to know what was around the corner, held an enormous fascination for me.
I wanted to make something of my life.
To dedicate myself to a profession that helped others.
To know happiness awaited me.
To receive confirmation that the two most important people in my life would always be in it. Because even the thought I could lose Ayden or Devin always sent horrific tremors of fear rushing through me.
For as long as I can remember, it had always been the three of us. Best friends to the end. The awesome-threesome. Forever infinity. It was a friendship more akin to family. A meeting of minds and hearts and promises. A connection so deep that we swore nothing or no one would ever come between us. We committed ourselves in a secret bond when we were twelve, and the commitment was imprinted on my heart in the same way it was inked on my skin.
I could never have predicted what was to come.
That I’d be the one to destroy everything.
No fortune teller ever told me that.
For years, I’ve thought of nothing but the what-ifs, and obsessed over so many questions.
What if a fortune teller had told me what would come to pass?
Would things have been different?
What would I change?
Would I have had the strength to stay away from my two best friends? To forge a completely different path in life? To deny something that was intrinsically a part of myself? Could I slice my heart apart knowing it was the right thing to do?
For years these questions have plagued me.
But I’m too afraid to confront the truth even though it’s front and center. Even though I carry it with me like a thundercloud, hovering and threatening but never opening up, never letting the storm loose.
Some truths are far too painful to acknowledge out loud.
As if to speak the words would confirm what I already know about myself.
That I’m weak, selfish, and not at all the person I thought I was.
Perhaps that’s why we don’t have that cognitive ability—to see the future, to know what lies ahead. I’ve thought of it often. If it’s evolution. If at some time in the future humans will be able to sense the path of their destiny. To alter their fate. To assume full control over every aspect of their life with conscious decision.
For now, all I’ve got is that squiggly line and a huge helping of regret.
What good comes from continually looking back? From locking myself in the haunted mansion of my past? Meandering with the ghosts of guilt and shame? For a girl who spent her happy youth so focused on the future, it’s a very sorry state of affairs. But I’m stuck in this washing machine that is my so-called life. The faster it churns, the more I lose myself. So, I try to stop time. To stand still. To numb myself to my reality. To blank out feeling and emotion. To close myself off. To never allow another human to imprint on my heart or to see into the black, murky depths of my soul.
The honest truth is, if I’d had a crystal ball—if I’d known what was going to happen—I still wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Because I would’ve missed those high points. Those happy memories that are the only thing keeping me alive right now.
If that’s what you can call my current existence.
And that makes me the most selfish, conceited liar on the planet.
