MY REVIEW:
Where do I start with this book? This story affected me in ways that no other book has. It’s my first book by this author, and definitely won’t be my last!! The writing is A-MAZING!!! It is told in two timelines. The great grandmother, Biji, tells her Americanized daughter the story of the Partition of India. She didn’t skip a thing when telling this story, she told all the distressing, heartbreaking details. I had no idea!! It was very hard to read at times, but I’m really glad i did! It was written so that you got a break from the tragedy when the great grandmother got tired out from telling a story that affected her so deeply. Then the story would turn to modern times when Priya, the great granddaughter adapted to the harder, less convenient life of her great grandmother. Priya and Rohit, the boy who worked for Biji, grow closer as the story progresses. And Priya comes to really love Biji and her life there with her.

It is a beautiful story about growth, love and learning to appreciate life (not just things). I never read anything historical. But this book made me realize the if it’s written well it can be something i enjoy reading. Plus i learned so much!!

EXCERPT:
“There are two kinds of people in this world,” Biji said eventually. “Those who find it easy and natural to justify their own actions, no matter how those actions affect the world around them…”
More tinkling of china.
“Okay. And?”
“And those for whom any kind of injustice or ill-gotten gain is painful. They would rather live in honest poverty than in palaces built on the pain or loss of those less fortunate than themselves.”
“Oh, here we go.” Mom heaved a sigh filled with so much exasperation that we could hear it where we stood. Definitely losing her shit. “Time to attack the wealthy. Biji, I really don’t have ti—”
Biji spoke over her. “Priya belongs to the second group. And there is nothing you or anyone can do to change that.”
“And her education? What about her future?”
“She will return with you to finish her education, of course,” Biji said. “But I have a feeling her career choice will not be one you would choose for her.”
“She’s decided on some noble pursuit, is that it?” Mom had a talent for injecting disgust into any phrase, no matter how positive. It was enough to motivate very noble pursuits, indeed. “And you actually think this sudden drive to righteousness will finally satisfy her? That after cleaning off the stains of our money she won’t be angry all the time?”
“She’s angry for one simple reason,” Biji said. “She’s angry because money is a poor substitute for faith.”
“Oh, faith!” New heights of disgust had been reached. Congratulations, Mom.
They fell silent. I imagined Biji smiling her mischievous smile.
“Look at that,” she said, her voice bright, clearly changing the subject. “Today the sky is such a clear blue, isn’t it? It is truly amazing how storms can strike, devastating the world beneath them, and then one day they simply pass away, leaving new life in their wake. And as the seasons pass, we watch what has become withered and old die back, making room for new growth, continuing the endless cycle of birth and death.”
I waited for Mom to answer, but she said nothing.
“I learned a new lesson recently,” Biji continued. “Just because something is gone, left in the ashes of the past…doesn’t mean it has to be forgotten. All life has one thing in common. The plants, the trees, down to every insect. That is the capacity to evolve. To learn from mistakes, to do better, to be a better version of itself.”
Biji spoke to me, not my mother, and I nodded just as if she could see me.
Maybe there didn’t need to be some cosmic plan to anything. Maybe simply living—really living—was enough.
After a few minutes, we heard the downstairs door open, and Namrita said something in rapid Punjabi to Biji, and they went inside.
I reached out and closed the window.
My tears were dry, and I found that I couldn’t stop smiling. Mom would always be Mom. Protective and caring in her own distant way, but definitely belonging to that first group Biji described.

Excerpt:
Morning, handsome.” I beam up at him, circling my arms around his neck. “Did you sleep
okay?”
“What kind of question is that?” Maddox asks, cupping my ass in my jeans. “I was
sleeping beside you.” He shrugs, but there’s a twinkle in his eye. “It was the best sleep of my
life.”
Coop gags. “And you have the nerve to call me cheesy?”
“Stop teasing him,” I toss over my shoulder. “I love Maddox’s new romantic side.”
Although, there was nothing romantic about the way he possessively claimed my body last
night. But that’s a private moment between the two of us and not something to share.
“Maddox doesn’t believe in romance,” Beck says, wandering into the kitchen with his iPad
in hand. I swear he sleeps with the damn thing. I guess it’s his form of a comfort blanket.
“I do now,” Maddox instantly replies, and Beck raises a brow in silent question. “I just
needed to find the right girl.”
I don’t enjoy thinking of any girls who might have come before me, so I purposely don’t
respond to that statement.
Leaning forward, I swipe the iPad out of Beck’s hands, placing it on the counter, as Coop
butters toast and Maddox pours coffee into several cups. “I’m making a new rule. No iPads,
tablets, cameras, or any kind of tech device at the table when we eat.” I cross my arms
around my chest, daring him to argue with me.
“No problem.” He kisses me sweetly. “You’re the boss.”
I arch a brow, letting my arms drop to my sides. “That easy, huh?”
Coop chuckles, sliding a hand underneath my top and palming my stomach. “Don’t
pretend like you don’t know you have all of us wrapped around your little finger.”
Not all of you. I gulp over the painful lump in my throat, staring at the empty chair where
Dane usually sits.

My Review: A Distant Voice by Bridie Blake

A Distant Voice

by Bridie Blake

.

8AC7C9EE-1EDA-4907-B780-991B925999BCIn life you don’t find your voice. It finds you.

Violet Hayes knows how to survive the year living with her grandmother in the small town of Wandorah, Tennessee.

• Make Rose happy
• Don’t sing or play guitar
• Avoid Sally Shaw
• Ignore Carter Jenkins

It seems simple enough, right? Wrong.

• How do you keep a depressed sister happy?
• How do you deny yourself your dream?
• How do you avoid a friendship?
• And how do you ignore a boy when he’s everywhere you turn?

Violet’s to-do list just became a whole lot harder.

Excerpt:

He smiled and reached out to pull the guitar toward him. He strummed his fingers over the strings and played a few chords before glancing over at me proudly.

“Impressive.”

He offered me the guitar. “Your turn.”

“And what makes you think I can play?”

“Your bloodlines.”

I snorted out a laugh and clapped my hand over my mouth in horror.

“Play away,” he said, ignoring my snort, and pushed the guitar into my hands.

I stared down at it with my mouth hanging open. The way my heart raced you’d think he’d pulled the pin on a grenade and handed it to me. Relax Violet. It’s an instrument. It can’t hurt you. Unless I tripped over it and broke my neck. And that could happen. Probably not entirely realistic while I’m holding it, but if I dropped it and then got up and tripped, it … oh dear god, what is wrong with me?

His mom called out his name and he gave me an apologetic shrug. “I’ll be right back.”

He left the room and I remained where I was, the guitar still burning my hands. It had been months since I’d played. Months since I’d felt that wave of joy I got whenever my fingers ran over the strings.

A yearning, so strong it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach, washed over me and my fingers moved. They ran over the strings, playing whatever came to mind. I closed my eyes and let myself be swallowed up by it all. I allowed myself to forget and be something else. Someone else.

I didn’t know how long I stayed like that but a shuffle behind me forced me back to reality. I opened my eyes and twisted around. Carter stood in the doorway, a look of wonder on his face and it made me squirm. I dropped my hands, rested the guitar on his bed, and scrambled to my feet. “I should go.”

He moved toward me slowly, as though scared a sudden movement would startle me. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I mumbled and folded my arms across my chest, tucking my hands into my armpits where they’d be safe and wouldn’t stray towards anymore strings.

His brow creased and I saw him trying to work out what had happened but I didn’t want to talk about it. I tried to duck out of his room before he asked me anything. He gripped my arm, stopping my quick exit. “It’s okay,” he said. “You’re allowed to enjoy things. You’re not betraying your sister by having fun or doing the things you want to do.” His voice, filled with sincerity and kindness, caused a lump to take up residence in my throat.

His hand ran along my arm and towards my hidden hand. He tugged on it until he freed it and he squeezed my fingers gently. I shook my head because he’s right, but he’s wrong at the same time. It was guilt over Rose that stopped me doing things but when it came to music, there was so much more to it.

Music destroyed Gran’s life. It ruined Mom’s childhood. I couldn’t love something like that because if I did, I’d open myself up to the same hurt. And I’m not anywhere near as strong as Gran. It would destroy me. It would be my trigger.

I wanted to tell him that. I wanted him to understand. But the words wouldn’t come out of me.

Bridie Blake lives, daydreams and writes in Melbourne, Australia. She’s happiest at her computer, coffee in hand, Tim Tams on standby and her furry companions Poppy and Mac at her feet. When not writing she’s usually found with a book in her hand or playing with her tribe of nieces and nephews.

Bridie is the author of the YA Fantasy novel, THE JEWEL OF KAMARA, and YA contemporary novels A DISTANT VOICE and UNTIL YOU.

.

The “Unofficial” Bio

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. Stories, songs, plays that I made my family perform. I always had a million things running through my mind and nothing has changed the older I’ve gotten. Actually it’s probably gotten worse. I’ve mastered the art of nodding along in conversations and slipping out the occasional ‘yeah’ and ‘mmm’ while constructing conversations and paragraphs in my head. If I stare at you blankly don’t fret. There’s nothing wrong with me, I’m just in one of my writing zones and there’s no helping me at this point! Just back away slowly and touch base with me in a month or so and I should be able to carry a conversation like a normal person. At least until the next writing wave hits.

It took me ten years to finish my first novel, THE JEWEL OF KAMARA, because I kept playing at living in the real world and thought being a writer was no more than a fantasy I shouldn’t indulge. Eventually the pull of my characters became too much that I just had to write the story, and I’ve never looked back. Creating stories is all I’ve ever wanted to do and now I’m doing it (while still playing at being in the real world from 9-5).

Surviving Amber SpringsSurviving Amber Springs
by Siobhan Davis

Series: Standalone
Genre: Contemporary Romance/ Reverse Harem
Age Category: Upper Young Adult/ New Adult
Release Date: 26 December, 2018

Book Description:

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone…

I’m the second-most hated person in Amber Springs.

First place honors go to my twin, Ethan; however, hate isn’t a strong enough word to convey how people feel about him.

Not that I blame anyone—some days, I hate him too. Mostly, I’m just lost and afraid, drowning in a sea of betrayal and guilt, wondering how this happened right under my nose.

There’s no choice but to leave. To move clear across the country in a last-ditch attempt to start over.

Transferring to a new school midway through senior year is hellish for most people. For me, it’s a welcome relief—until someone discovers our secret and now everyone knows.

The pointing, whispering, and scathing looks follow me around again, and I’m back to square one. Except, this time, I’m not alone.

Axel, Skeet, and Heath took me under their wing from the minute I arrived here. I’ve no idea why three of the hottest guys in town took any interest in me or why they continue to have my back, but I’m so grateful to have them in my corner.

Because, right now, they’re the only reason I’m not following my brother into an early grave.

Due to sensitive content, and possible triggers, this book is recommended to readers aged 18+. Full length novel.

I was born a child of the Elite; destined to live a life of privilege in Sun City.
With one decision I gave it all up.

Ana Jacobs knows the Elite and their depravity all too well. She was one of them once. Her father was a member of the Inner Circle and head of the Trinity funding the corruption of Sun City. When he learned she knew the names of those he’d hidden so well, he turned his back on her; had her kidnapped and tortured to protect his secrets.

When she escapes the island and learns of her father’s death at the hands of a knife-wielding vigilante called the Nightwatchman, she returns to Sun City, vowing to use her knowledge to protect the city. As a city cop, she blends into the background, and no one suspects her real motives.

Levi Bennett knows where Ana’s been. He’s also an Elite, but where Ana was sent to the island, he ended up there by accident. While Ana buries herself in her work and stopping the flow of illegal drugs and weapons into the poverty-stricken Blue District, Levi covers his pain by partying and spending his trust fund on buying bars and restaurants.

Thrown together by Levi’s constant pressing of the limits, the two can’t deny the connection they share through their dark pasts.

Their demons are one in the same, but some demons can’t be tamed.

Into the Darkest Night

Book Excerpt:
So, you and Lily I ask, pointing between the two of them as the familiar burn settles into my throat. Alcohol isn’t something I’ve missed, and I watch Levi from the corner of my eyes as he shakes his head when the bartender offers more. It’s in direct violation of everything in his files. My fingers tingle, and I pull them into fists at my sides as I look back to Robbie. He nods, and his nose twitches as he signals for the bartender to fill him up. Lily tucks a loose strand behind her ear and shakes her head to the bartender. She shifts from foot to foot as she stares down at her tan and teal cowboy boots.
Want to dance? Robbie asks Lily, and her eyes widen with relief.
Yeah, that sounds great.
They disappear into the crowd on the dance floor, and I sit on the stool beside Levi, letting my head roll to my shoulder, so I’m looking at him. Just happened to get too loud tonight?
He smirks, watching the crowd sway to the music. Check the business file like you did mine, and you’ll see it happens regularly. Our neighbors just aren’t that fun.
Mhmm, I reply as I lean back.
So, you and Robbie, how did I not know you? Levi finally asks, changing the subject.
I raise my eyebrows at him, and his hands are in fists, the smile on his lips gone.
It was after you went missing, but I was around before that we’re both Elite, well, were. You were just a tad bit engrossed with Lily from what I remember, I reply.
His eyes drift to the ceiling. Ah, yeah that.
It must’ve been awkward coming back to. I don’t know how to put softly your best friend dating your girlfriend. I don’t understand why my throat thickens as I watch his reaction. I shouldn’t care if it bothers him.
Maybe it’s because I get how lonely coming back is. My toes curl in my shoes at the thought. Loneliness is my only friend.
Levi leans forward, pressing his muscular forearms into his knees. Just a little bit. His shoulders lift, and his eyes come up to mine, causing an eruption of tingles up my spine. But they’re good for each other. I’m not who I used to be, so it’s not like it would’ve worked anyway.
Butterflies erupt out of dormant chrysalis I never thought would be awakened as his eyes flick over my face. The calculated smugness is gone, and the man before me is part the innocent boy I had a crush on all throughout high school and part damaged man that I feel, stupidly no doubt, that only I could ever understand.
I turn in the stool, so I’m facing the bar. Do you have anything that doesn’t taste like Windex?
Levi laughs as he goes behind the divider. He reaches up to the top shelf lined with expensive looking bottles, and his shirt lifts, showing one of the dimples in his back and a pale scar that travels diagonally from it. My eyes follow the line to a tattoo of a kanji Japanese character for a skill I’ve yet to master.
Seishinteki ky spiritual refinement.
Judging by its placement on his back, he has almost as many skill marks as I do. Not only did Levi survive the same hell I did, but he’s received the same training.
Levi Bennett is a Shinobi a ninja.
Just like me.
We’re something that isn’t supposed to exist in the modern age, yet here we are. I watch as he mixes me a drink, dropping a cherry in the glass before sliding it across the concrete counter to me.
How’s paying for your father’s sins going? he asks.
I raise an eyebrow, looking at the dark pink drink. What’s this?
His voice is level as he answers, Unoriginal Sin.
My eyes lift to his, and he leans down on his forearms, so our faces are inches apart.
Real original, Shinobi, I say, my voice so low only he can hear it.
He stands up and rubs his hand over his the scruff around his mouth down to his chin.
I guess we’re more similar than I thought he says. His eyes flick to the television as he nods to it. He’s trying to save the city, too. Looks like he’s doing a better job, though.
I read the text scrolling across the screen since the volume isn’t on.
The Nightwatchman has struck again, this time taking out Adam Cleary, an international businessman. It appears Cleary was involved with sex trafficking.
My ears ring. Another name from my list and my prime suspect for the Nightwatchman is standing in front of me with his arms crossed and pulsing with irritatingly sexy muscles.

“Voices that do not speak out, cannot be heard! And hands that do not fight, cannot win wars! And Light that does not shine, cannot penetrate Darkness!” ~ Everything Under The Sun
.
This book may be a Dystopian Romance, but it is really so much more than that!! I’ve never found a book so difficult to review. It’s just there’s so much, and I don’t want to spoil anything. But know this. You may look and see a long book, and think there’s no way can I read this. I know I was a bit overwhelmed when I saw the page count. But then I started to read and was drawn right in from the start, and I did NOT like putting this book down for anything. I was completely consumed, I was living it! Emotionally I was on a roller coaster, of course it was an extremely emotional one. Life was hard in the dystopian world. Believe me I had several gulps in my throat throughout this book, never mind tears in my eyes. But I loved the book, like I said, I couldn’t stand to be away from it. This review is probably a bit crazy at this point, because all the feelings from the story are rushing through me as I write this and I feel like it’s so hard to get them out in words. But there is so much that happens, there’s just so much to it!! You’re really never bored!! It’s quite a rush!

“He is a good man; he is strong and kind and honorable and incredibly flawed but incredibly human, and to still be human is a feat in and of itself—he is so strong.” ~ Everything Under The Sun
.
I will say this though, the relationship between Thais and Atticus is so beautiful!!! They both have things that have happened in their pasts that they have a hard time getting past, of course it’s not surprising in the world they live in. But the way they’re there for each other. It’s refreshing too, because this is definitely NOT Insta love for sure. And as they grow to care, they make mistakes. It’s like they’re learning how to love together. It’s beautiful.
I cannot believe this is my first book by Jessica Redmerski’s!!! This book is so deep, the characters are rich, the world building is vivid, the emotions are portrayed across the pages so intensely that at times they took my breath away. All I can say is BRAVO BRAVO Jessica Redmerski!!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Dystopian Romance!!!

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. I was supposed to travel with him until he got me out of Lexington City and then I was to make a run for it, kill him if I had to—but I didn’t. I was supposed to stay with these people and leave Atticus to do what he wanted, go where he wanted, without me—but I couldn’t. I was supposed to be afraid of him not only because of the terrible man he was when I first laid eyes on him, but also because he was a man—but I wasn’t. I wasn’t afraid of him.

I was afraid for him.

I was afraid of being without him…

“Thais?”

I looked up; my bottom lip quivered.

“I will wait for you,” I said, trying to be strong. I wiped my tears, swallowed hard and nodded.

Atticus dashed outside, pushing the barn door out of his way. Seconds later he came back with the horse. He tossed the quilt we’d slept on the night in the barn, over the horse’s back. Then he went over to the backpacks, stepping around Rachel’s unconscious body, and shoved everything back inside. He helped my arms into the straps of the larger backpack.

Fitting his hands on my hips, Atticus hoisted me up and set me on the horse; I grabbed a hold of the horse’s reins.

“Stay out of sight of the house,” he said as he fitted the smaller backpack and his jacket between my legs. “And cut through the woods there”—he pointed toward the back of the barn—“that’s west; just keep as straight as you can in that direction, but don’t leave the woods.”

I nodded.

He walked with me outside the barn, stopped to look out at the flat land beyond the highway where those who were coming for us would likely be, and then led me around the barn. The deep woods beckoned me out ahead; I couldn’t help but feel intimidated by them, as if they were some kind of final leg of our journey—or the beginning of my journey alone.

Steadying my breath, I looked down at Atticus once more, transfixed on his intense blue eyes, the sculpted shape and rough texture of his handsome face, and I couldn’t imagine at this point never seeing it again.

“I’ll come for you,” he promised.

Tearing my gaze from his, I faced forward and tightened my grip of the reins.

Tell us a little about why you write in so many different genres. Does it work for you?

I can’t stick to one genre. I love writing all types of stories. Does it work for me? Yes and no. Yes, because I’d start to feel claustrophobic if I had to write in the same genre all the time. No, because I think it confuses my readers that I write everything under the same author name. I regret that decision to this day. My advice to authors considering it: Don’t make this mistake! I’m in the process now of correcting that error.

How do you plot your novels? Do you outline?

I never outline because I like to let the story and the characters take me where they want to go. Some authors can outline very well and it works for them, but I can’t do it. It has always felt more natural to me to just go along for the ride and see where it takes me, kind of like in real life, I guess. Some scenes in my books were figured out ahead of time, but not ‘planned out’ ahead of time, and there’s a big difference. The only exception to this method is that I do always know my ending before I begin. (Except with my book DIRTY EDEN)

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I’m impatient. Very impatient. It’s challenging for me to get through the first 23chapters of every book because I have a bad habit of looking at how much I have left to go. I just want to be done with it already so that my readers can enjoy!

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

The last sentence. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love getting into the story, living out my character’s lives, but there’s nothing like a finished manuscript. It’s a huge accomplishment and I doubt I’ll ever tire of it.

What would you like for readers to take away from your novels?

I just want my readers to be able to connect on some level with the characters I create and take with them an experience rather than just a story. I want them to think about the characters long after they’ve finished the book. I want tears! And genuine laughter! And, I admit, I also want them so mad at me they *almost* want to physically hurt me, LOL! If I can accomplish any of those things, then I’ve done my job.

What would you say is your writing style regarding theme?

I tend to always write about deep issues, and even when I try to write a ‘fun’ and ‘flirty’ story with just a little average relationship drama, it never turns out that way. Somehow, I always end up dragging my characters through some really tough stuff before they even think of seeing any light on the other side. So, I guess my style tends to be ‘dark, emotional, intense, with a happy ending’.

When did you first realize that you wanted to become a writer?

I started my first novel at the age of thirteen and I’ve been writing ever since. Writing has been the one consistent thing throughout my life and I can’t imaginelife without it.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I never stop writing for the day at the end of a scene or sentence, but instead right in the middle of them. This helps me prevent writer’s block and keeps my mind fresh.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the writing frame-ofmind?

Cold brew coffee.

Do you think children are more encouraged these days to read and/or write?

I think more than ever children are encouraged to read and write and I LOVE it. I know Harry Potter had A LOT to do with this and that’s just another reason why I have so much love and respect for J.K. Rowling.

When it comes to writing, what are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?

I love to write dialogue. It feels and flows more natural to me. I feel like I struggle a little more with description, because I’m impatient and sometimes it feels like the description is slowing me down. But I pace myself! If I didn’t, the entire novel would be one giant conversation.

Here’s an EXCERPT to wet your appetite:

“Hello Damien, it is the sweetest of pleasures to finally get to meet you. You’re even more stunning in person.” Her voice was as sensual as Jill’s. Yet it was somehow darker, holding a slight accent Damien couldn’t place.

The movements of her gorgeous hips were exaggerated as she walked right up to him, pressing her body against his. Her thigh meeting his groin as her hand ran down his side to rest on his hip.

Leaning her cheek in to rest on his chest, she sighed, the other she placed right next to her face.

“Do I know you?” Damien grew more uneasy as the hand on his chest moved down his side, pushing his shirt up so the woman could savor the muscles of his abdomen and chest.

The other moved down to his ass, squeezing it firmly enough to make Damien wince, hissing through his teeth.

“We haven’t had the pleasure of meeting but I do know you, Damien. Your dog truly doesn’t understand what a truly delicious treat she has.”

The woman leaned in close to his face, her breath hot with a clear desire. Her perfume smelled like one of those very expensive name brands. It was floral with a hint of vanilla wafted into his nose only to shift into an almost mellow hint of spice.

“What are you talking about? I don’t have a dog.”

Every nerve ending in his body told him he should try to get away from this woman. He could sense the same level of danger as the men in the alley. The encounter still left Damien with nightmares.

“Your lycan. The one you seem to be attracted to doesn’t care about you, you know. She’s only interested in her dead lover’s soul you harbor inside your gorgeous body. I, on the other hand, could care less and would give you whatever you could possibly want.”

The woman’s hand was cold as ice as her finger ran over his lips, playfully flicking his lower lip just as Jill had. “I don’t care about the soul inside of you like that mongrel or my father does. You’re so beautiful, who would care? Come with me. I promise you would enjoy the high life like a noble in our coven does. No one would question you or I would tear their heads from their bodies.”

Damien closed his eyes, his jaw held tight. He didn’t want to let himself think about the idea that Jill only wanted him for being an incarnation of Lucius. He wanted to get to her and find out which one of them she saw when they were together.

“I appreciate the offer but I need to go. I have a friend expecting me.” He tried to get free of her only to have his wrists held firmly against the wall.

“Your dog, you mean? She can wait. I’m not done savoring my time with you.” Damien jumped as her seductive voice became dark and demanding. She moved his hands behind his back, using one of hers to hold him in place as she took his jaw. “I wonder if you taste as good as you look.”

Excerpt:
Hours seemed to pass as Damien paced the floor, rubbing his hands across his face and scratching his head.
When Jill finally did arrive, she sounded as though she’d been sprinting. “Gods, I’m so sorry for making you wait so long. Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine, Jill. Today just hasn’t been my day.” Damien replied, trying to keep himself from sounding too angry.
“I tried to get home as soon as I could. Kain and Gabriel told me what happened.” Jill said, trying to sound reassuring.
The room stayed silent for a while, the tension grew only thicker with each passing minute.
Damien sat down in the chair, his head against his the knuckles of his thumbs, his elbows on his thighs. He wanted to gather the words he wanted to say before opening his mouth. Jill kept next to the makeshift work desk in the corner of her room.
Damien sighed as he leaned forward. His forearms rested on his knees. “Jill. I need to ask you something. I’m not sure how to go about it so I’m just going to be blunt.”
“Go ahead.”
“When we’re together, do you see me as Damien or as Lucius?” Damien’s voice was slightly strained, almost afraid of the answer Jill might give him.
Sighing, Jill stood up and made her way over to Damien in the chair. She knelt down onto floor in front of him, her hands rubbed his knees in slow, comforting circles. “Damien, I don’t know what lies you were told in the hallway but I can assure you they weren’t true. Yes, it was Lucius’ soul that called me to you but I soon realized I didn’t care if it was him or not. When I first saw you, there was something about you that made me so curious, I had to get to know you more. The more time we spent together, the more I realized I had been chasing a ghost. I had forgotten what it meant to truly love someone.”
Jill rose up, her hand slowly reaching for Damien’s face, caressing his cheek. “To answer your question, I see you, Damien Pierce. The man who took my heart and soul the minute I gazed into these beautiful eyes.”
Damien felt his heart beat hasten as Jill lay a soft kiss on his cheek, withdrawing and waiting for his response.
Without thinking, he reached his hand out to touch Jill’s face, her skin softer than he imagined. His thumb ran the length of her cheekbone to her ear. She looked so human, no one would ever imagine she wasn’t if they saw her this close. It surprised him.
It was as though he were seeing her for the first time. Her lips the color of strawberry, her icy green eyes so full of the love and affection she must have harbored the moment she’d seen him.

Review for Running Out Of Space (Sunblinded: 1) by S. J. Higbee

B10A5454-3782-49B2-8673-A8516C5FBE3B

I can’t recall whose idea it was. Just that me and mis amigas were sick of wading through yet another unjust punishment detail. So we decide to take ourselves off on a short jaunt to the lower reaches of Space Station Hawking to prove that fertile Iberian girls can also deal with danger.

The consequences of that single expedition change the lives of all four of us, as well as that of the stranger who steps in to save us down in lawless Basement Level. Now I have more excitement and danger than I can handle, while confronting lethal shipboard politics, kidnapping, betrayal. And murder.

When I first started reading this I found it kind of hard to connect and get involved in the story. It was slow going. But, I have to say this may be because of coming down from a book hangover or even my mood. I did have a bit of a book hangover before I started this one. So, I would never take stars off for my problems getting into it, because most likely it was not the failing of the author.

Elizabeth or Lizzy, as she is most commonly referred to, is a wonderful protagonist. My favorite kind actually, because though she is a strong person, she is also very real and flawed and weak at times. She is someone I feel I can truly relate to, I feel like I can step in to her character and live through her eyes as I read the book. I laughed with her, struggled with her, rolled my eyes, flushed my cheeks, fell in love, held back my tears, then cried them into my pillow with her. Lizzy was a character who went through so much, and came out of it with tremendous growth in a short period of time. I thought this book excelled in character development, which makes me happy because I’m totally a character driven reader.

As far as world building, I struggled a little with picturing the surroundings. And in science fiction world development is usually dominant, which can drive me crazy. I like to be able to picture the surroundings, but I don’t need to know all the technical details. Sometimes I felt myself able to picture things better than others. So, I’m not saying it’s non-existent here, but I would like to have had a little more.

But over all the book works. The strong characters really carry the book, especially Lizzy. I’m so glad I had that opportunity to be able to read it!! I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
