Cover Reveal: Two Thousand Years by M. Dalto

3290F0F3-4EAF-4CFE-9842-321C42E8E15BTwo Thousand Years

Publisher: Parliament House Press

Two thousand years ago, the Prophecy of Fire and Light foretold the coming of the Queen Empress who would lead the Empire into a time of peace and tranquility. But instead of the coming of a prosperous world, a forbidden love for the Empress waged a war that ravaged the land, creating a chasm between the factions, raising the death toll of innocent lives until the final, bloody battle.

Centuries later, Alexandra, a twenty-two-year-old barista living in Boston, is taken to an unfamiliar realm of mystery and magic where her life is threatened by Reylor, its banished Lord Steward. She crosses paths with Treyan, the arrogant and seductive Crown Prince of the Empire, and together they discover how their lives, and their love, are so intricately intertwined by a Prophecy set in motion so many years ago.

Alex, now the predestined Queen Empress Alexstrayna, whose arrival was foretold by the Annals of the Empire, controls the fate of her new home as war rages between the Crown Prince and Lord Steward. Either choice could tear her world apart as she attempts to keep the Empire’s torrid history from repeating itself. In a realm where betrayal and revenge will be as crucial to her survival as love and honor, Alex must discover whether it is her choice – or her fate – that determines how she survives the Empire’s rising conflicts.

Despite being an art history student, Summer isn’t thrilled to be stuck with her archeologist family all summer in Greece. As the magic begins to unfold again, her Nutcracker comes to life and they are faced to fight the lurking Mouse King and his followers. Escaping once more into the realm of WinterDream, the Nutcracker Prince reveals that the world is under a curse, and the Mouse King is determined to have WinterDream for himself. Even before Sydney could hold a pencil in her hand, she was making up stories in her head. Sydney wrote her first book in the second grade, Girls [sorry Lena Dunham], about her and her best friends in college [because college was super cool when you were 8] who went on treasure hunts and fought bad guys with their super powers. Her second grade teacher was so impressed, she laminated a cover and bound it. That will forever be the moment Sydney dreamed of holding a copy of her own book and placing it on a shelf.

Now all grown up, Sydney still stays in the fantasy world, fashioning worlds where the power of a star can be harnessed and used for time travel, flying is just as easy as walking here on earth – and her best friends are fairies. Sydney represented by Rebecca Angus at Golden Wheat Literary. The Halves of Us, Book 1 is her first novel. Sydney resides in Austin, Texas with her nerdy husband, Cody, and three fat cats, Vincent Van Gogh, Mufasa, and Bella.

My Thoughts:

OMG!!! I NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE NOW!!! So let’s make it into one, ok?!
That’s exactly how I felt reading this book. I felt like I was watching a creepy movie. SO GOOD!!!

The werewolf concept in this novella is so unique, I loved that! It was so well written and really kept my interest. The story is told through the voice of Mercy, and what a voice she has! You can’t help but really like Mercy!!

I’m hoping (hint, hint) that this novella is this beginning of a series of books?! But if it is not, I am happy to have been able to have experienced The She-Wolf of Kanta!! I highly recommend this to my horror friends who want a quick little horror story that’s REALLY GOOD!!! Definitely 5/5 Stars!!!

“Grandmother looked up just then, staring right into my face with those unblinking, birdlike eyes, and said, “Angelica, is that you?”

I tried to answer her, but my mouth wouldn’t even open. Besides, what would I have said if my voice were to have worked?

“Answer me, you. Why are you always hiding from me?” She was peering so intently that the beam of her vision was surely searing my skin.

The feeling of being watched had always been a phobia of mine, the curse of someone who is used to being invisible. Icy terror washed over me, although I wasn’t sure why. I was only sitting in the cabinetry, but if I hadn’t known any better, it felt like I was being caught in the act of murder, knowing my punishment would be the end of my freedom and life.”

“I have always known that I am invisible—I had no idea that eventually I would fade away completely.”

THIS BOOK!!!! It deserves so many shiny stars, and hearts and a nice big trophy! Misty Mount is such an enormously talented writer! The way she was able to develop Zylia Moss’ world and the characters in it, all through just Zylia’s eyes was AMAZING!!! The characters were very well developed. I felt I knew each character well, and the ones that Zylia was closest too…like her sister, Ivy, and her best friend, Terra…I felt that I knew them the best, aside from Zylia of course. Her house, with its many rooms and floors. Her school. Her best friend, Terra’s house, and her dad’s DIY projects leaving the house always array. I could picture these places so well when reading the book. All described through only Zylia’s voice. This is pure gold to me! I love a book where things truly come to life for me. Where I can really picture the people and places, and what is going on, in my head. It makes feel like I have left my world and stepped in to the author’s world for a while, and I can vividly see my surroundings and the people. Books like these are the ones that I go to bed and end up dreaming about afterward, that’s how deeply it affects me.

Zylia has low self-esteem, she’s socially inept, she’s shy, clumsy and very awkward. When she is put in a situation she can’t handle she flies into an anxiety/panic attack. I found it so curious that someone from such a large family would have this problem, but I don’t know, maybe that’s the problem. Maybe being in a large family it’s easy to get lost, ignored, and when you’re a sensitive young child you might develop low self-esteem from that. So, Zylia has retreated and drawn into herself. She has done so much so that many people don’t notice her, even when she right there in the same room with them. She can’t seem to speak up for herself at all, not even to ask for them to pass the mashed potatoes at the family dinner table. She tries, but all the comes out is a whisper. But when you have the parents and six children at the table, the conversation gets pretty loud. So poor Zylia ends up with the last tiny bits of mashed potatoes left in the bowl by the time it gets to her. It’s the same at school and trying to speak up in school or talk to other kids, either a whisper or nothing comes out. If they even notice her, they never hear her. Poor Zylia.

But now, Zylia starts to physically fade away. She’s actually disappearing. I won’t tell you anymore, because you need to read the book to learn the mystery of it all. But you will love it. You’ll love sweet Zylia and her good heart. You will love Zylia’s world, her best friend, her family and more. I don’t want to say too much. But, I will say this! If there were Academy Awards for Authors, I feel that Misty Mount would definitely deserve one!! She is a phenomenal writer!!! I don’t think I have ever read “first person” done SO well!! This is definitely going into my favorites of 2018!!

I recommend you read this NOW!! It’s YA Fantasy/Coming of Age, but you could really add so much more to that label!!!

EXCERPT:

In this scene, Syl and her squad are at a club where Euphoria’s playing. Syl’s never seen Euphoria, and she’s excited, but Fiann’s acting weird, treating Syl poorly and trying to bully her into double-dating the Dickinson twins, Brody and Bryce. Syl ducks into the bathroom to catch her breath.

* * * *

I take a deep breath and pat the nail where it rests secretly against my skin. Okay, Syl. It’s go-time. I shove the door open. Head held high, I step out into the flashing lights of the club, and bam! run right into someone.

“Steady on.” Strong hands keep me from falling on my butt, and during our awkward two-step, I catch a glimpse of raven-dark hair and sapphire-blue eyes ringed in gold. Her deep chuckle is like rolling thunder.

“I-I’m sorry.” I look up, brushing my red curls out of my face.

Whoa. My poor heart. She’s gorgeous. Her eyes are all intense and glowy as she searches my face. The ache in my chest gets worse—but also, somehow better.

What is happening? I reach out and touch her hand. Where I want to feel skin, I feel the leather of a glove.

Still, a jolt passes between us.

She lingers, her pretty face a bit dazed. She looks from our touching hands back up. “You…”

She feels it too. Whatever it is.

And dear heaven and all the angels, she’s… Wow. She’s something else. High cheekbones, full lips curved into a smile that’s part mischief, part mayhem. Her bronze skin holds an inner glow even in the dim light of the club, and those eyes… When she looks at me, the club, the flashing lights, all the people—everything falls away and there is only the two of us.

“Who are you?” she whispers, and I hear it because she’s leaned in close, so close I can feel her warm breath on my cheek.

“I…” Introduce yourself already! But I’m all tongue-tied, frozen like the world’s biggest dork. My fingers find the strip of skin between her glove and her sleeve. Ohhhh…so warm and silky, and… What the heck are you doing, Syl?

She chuckles again, more rumbly, rolling thunder. “Are you all right?”

Yes. No. Urgggg… I step back, my cheeks on fire. She smells like all the good things in autumn—crisp leaves and harvest moons and sultry bourbon vanilla. Whoa. I’m getting a little swoony. “I-I’m fine. Really. Are you?”

“Yes, but I’d like to…” She swallows hard, seeming almost shy beneath her super-cool exterior. She licks her bottom lip, and I nearly pass out right there. “Will you meet me after the show?”

Did mine ears deceive me? Girl works fast! Plus, I can tell she’s at least a year older than me. “I…” Say something, silly!

“I’m sorry.” She pulls her hand from mine and steps away.

The loss of her touch leaves me cold. Moments from losing her to the crowd, I pluck up my courage. “What’s your name?”

That smile curves her lips like a kept secret. “I’m Euphoria.”

Euphoria. Whaaaaaaaaatttt? Seriously, Syl, only you could carry on an entire freakin conversation with your goth idol and not even recognize her.

But no…there’s something else, some other reason I didn’t recognize her right off the bat. I just can’t put my finger on it. Plus, I’m still swoony.

“I have to go.” She leans in, whispers in my ear, “After?”

I feel like only my heart can answer that question, but before I can even blink, she’s gone. Like gone-gone. One moment she’s in front of me; the next she’s vanished. Poof!

Euphoria. And she wants to see me “after.”

Crazy. This is crazy.

I shade my eyes from the blue-and-red houselights and look to the stage. After about ten minutes, the house music fades away, and the stage goes dark.

A lone silhouette appears there, backlit. It’s her.

Heat races through my body, my hand tingling from her touch. My stomach does a lazy barrel-roll, and those butterflies everyone’s always told me about? Yeah, apparently mine are Olympic gymnasts, because my whole stomach feels like it’s going for the Gold.

Oooookay. Chill out. I touch the iron nail beneath my dress. Gotta thank Glamma for the lucky pendant.

I step out of the bathroom and beeline toward the stage. I feel feverish, mad as hatter and a March hare all rolled into one.

I only know this: I have to see her again.

I’ve always hated crowds, but without another thought, I push my way to the stage. Toward Euphoria, and toward the “after” that will bring me back to her.

Together they must fight to protect the most important part of their inheritance, the Relic of Knowledge. Unfortunately, Calista has no memory of her magical life and no idea where she hid the relic. As her memories begin to resurface with bone crushing agony, Calista must face the facts: she is a Volshebnitsya of the High Realm of Skazka and it is her duty to stop the Glava, the masters of Shadowlands.
The world around them begins to falls apart. Plagued by storms that are destroying cities and torn by the sinister monsters of Russian lore. The secrets locked deep inside her mind are her destiny and her undoing. If both worlds are to survive, Calista and Brendan must face the darkness around them—and the darkness threatening from within.

EXCERPT:

“What’s going on?” I shout, as the stranger shoves me into the room used to store all of our stuff, shutting the door behind him. I expect someone to come to my rescue, but it’s like no one can hear me yell. Stumbling back against the bed, I turn around and find myself face to face with another man already in the room. They tower over me, flanking me on both sides, wearing an expression of hatred that I don’t understand. I’ve never seen them before.
“Look, I don’t know who you think I am, but you’ve got the wrong girl. I have no idea who you are or why I’m here.” I say, and my words sound a lot calmer than I feel. Staring at the large men, I keep backing away until I’m on the other side of the bed.
“Volshebnitsya Skazki, sechasze otdavai Znaniye, ili mi ybiyom vseh.”
“Umm, what?” My brain pushes to comprehend the strange words as the man in front of me growls with every syllable. His eyes narrow and he exhales, almost like a dog, before trying again.
“You are Calista Faulkner,” he says, his voice thick with an accent I can’t quite place. “You will tell where Znaniye hides or we kill everyone in this house.”
It takes a second for the broken English words to register before I find the courage to reply. “Kill? Did you not hear a word I just said? You’ve got the wrong girl!” I’m shouting now, but I don’t care if I sound like a lunatic. Someone has got to hear me.
“Do not bother yelling, Protector.” The goon who dragged me in here speaks again, as if reading my mind. “Walls now sealed with majyk of land. No one hear you now.”
I’ve always thought of myself as a logical person. I’ve always thought that presented with a situation where my life is in danger I will do the right thing. Those corners of my mind are trying to piece together what’s happening, but the rest of my body is shaking in fear. It’s as if I’m two people all of a sudden. One, fully focused on getting out of here, with a calm mind. Second, shaking like a leaf with no coherent thought. Thankfully, the logical me wins out.
“Listen,” I try again, my voice coming out soothing, but I do take a step back to put some distance between us. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. If you’ll just let me go, I can find someone who lives in this house, I’m sure they’ll be happy to show you where whatever you’re looking for is.”
“Do not lie, Protector!” the stranger booms, shaking the floor I’m standing on with just his voice. “This house has no wards, no majyk. You would not be so careless to leave the relic here.” I move a bit farther back, putting the bed between us.
“You guys have had a little too much to drink.” I say, because I can’t even fathom this being my reality right now. With every word, my mind shouts at me that this is not a joke. These…things…are here to hurt me. I can’t constitute them as men any longer, as their faces continue to ripple in an otherworldly way, each time they breathe.
“Enough!” the man who was already in the room bellows, speaking up for the first time. “Do not play games, Protector. Tell us where it is and we kill you fast. Lie to us, and we kill you slow. Then, we kill all humans in this house.”
The man takes a step toward me and suddenly, there is a sword in front of my face. I jump as it manifests itself in his hand, my own hands flying over my mouth. I don’t think I drank anything but soda, so my mind must be playing tricks on me. I swear the man grows in size right before my eyes. He’s almost seven feet tall now, towering over my small frame, his face twisting and turning, becoming something other than human. His eyes bulge out, taking over his face, and from what I can see, there seem to be scars all over his skin. As if someone stitched pieces of flesh together. I watch, frozen, as the giant stalks up to me, pinning me against the wall in one breath. I try to struggle, but the hand on my throat is cutting off any circulation.
“Tell me where it is,” he growls, the words almost unintelligible with the noise coming from deep within his throat. I try to shake my head, give him some indication that I have no idea what he’s talking about, but he growls again and then there is pain.
Excruciating pain.
I feel my blood drip down my arm where his sword tip cuts me and that’s when I realize this is no joke. These men–monsters–are here for me and they will kill me if I don’t tell them what they want to know. If only I knew what they were asking, but none of this makes sense. I’m gasping for breath, my thoughts a jumbled mess as the pain spreads through my body. He cuts deeper, and any moment he’ll scrape the bone, leaving a permanent mark.
I push against the burning sensation spreading up my arm, struggling to breathe as he crushes my windpipe with his gigantic claw. My vision swims before me as I try to focus on his face and there is more distortion than before. It’s as if layers of a mask keep coming off the longer he’s around me. I don’t understand how my mind manages to catalogue anything through the pain, but I fight it. I fight with my whole being.
An instinct I didn’t know I possessed kicks in, overshadowing the pain. It’s as if a switch has been turned on inside of me and just like that, the pain stops. It becomes manageable. As if, all of a sudden, I can push it back. Get it under control.
There is no time to dwell on the new discovery as the monster drops me to my feet. I land hard, my bones rattling with the impact and I don’t see the blow coming. His hand connects with my cheek and I’m on my knees. Tears sting my eyes, but I push them back, just like I’m pushing the pain back. The response is automatic, almost like a reflex. I watch my attacker stalk across the room and I’m on my feet.
Acting on pure instinct, I kick out as the stranger comes barreling toward me, sending him reeling into the bedpost. Surprised my action has the desired affect, I scramble to my feet, but I don’t make it far. The door on the other side of the room opens, and a blur of movement catches my attention as the other man comes flying across the room.
I don’t wait to see who or what did that, as I turn to the window, push it open and run.
