Logan has vowed to stay away from human girls, but he can’t help falling for the different and beautiful Sadie. Unfortunately, protecting the girl of his destiny could destroy his own kind…

Surrounded by people with conflicting agendas—hell-bent on using her for their own aim—Sadie is confused when the lines between good and evil are blurred. It’s impossible to tell friend from foe, and no one can be trusted.

A modern telling of a classic tale…

This isn’t a typical love story. This is a story of what happens when love is so powerful and all-consuming that it has the ability to destroy everyone involved. It’s definitely not pretty and it’s certainly not a fairytale, but it’s their story and it couldn’t be told any other way.

91A46BC0-2FE4-498F-A125-636AFA796574

This book….it was NOT what I was expecting!!! I knew it was supposed to be a modern spin on Wuthering Heights, of sorts. But…STILL!!! I’m not going to say too much about the story and give too much away. This book is the kind of book to go in reading blind.

This isn’t your normal love story. But it is about dark, twisted love…Obsessive! These characters are very complex. It’s about money, greed, revenge…it’s very angsty, frustrating and intense!!! There’s lots of twists and turns. While the story is mostly about Heath and Catrina, there are many characters that we get to know and have strong feelings about. It’s a very character heavy story, and all the characters are extremely well written!

Speaking of the writing, it was SO well done. Especially with two authors. Nikki Ash and K. Webster wrote seamlessly! It’s beautifully done! I definitely think these two should write together again in the future!!!
.

About K. Webster

K Webster is the author of dozens romance books in many different genres including contemporary romance, historical romance, paranormal romance, and erotic romance. When not spending time with her husband of twelve years and two adorable children, she’s active on social media connecting with her readers.

About Nikki Ash

Reading is like breathing in, writing is like breathing out. – Pam Allyn

While reading and writing are her passions, her two children are her entire world. You can probably find them at a Disney park before you would find them at home on the weekends!

My Review: Time’s Up, Afton by Brent Jones

Time’s Up, Afton

The Afton Morrison Series #4

Brent Jones

.

8F30E342-3666-4A77-AB7B-8F4C68D1F2F0Some secrets stay buried for a lifetime, but nothing lasts forever.

Connected to a number of high-profile deaths, Afton finds herself not only under scrutiny from the chief of police, but damned in the court of public opinion, as well.

In the aftermath of the fiery assault on Wakefield, a low-level gang has infiltrated the town, flooding its streets with bad drugs, killing several teenagers. As Afton prepares for the final showdown with her tormentor, she marks each gang member as a target for elimination, in a methodical plan to gain the upper hand. What follows is a race against the clock that will keep readers guessing until the very last page, as Afton risks life and limb to fulfill her murderous mission of doing good in the world.

Time’s Up, Afton is the fourth and final part in a new serial thriller by author Brent Jones. Packed with grit and action, The Afton Morrison Series delves into a world of moral ambiguity, delivering audiences an unlikely heroine in the form of a disturbed vigilante murderess.

As this series came to a close, the bittersweet feeling of how do I say goodbye to Afton, came over me. I loved this series since it’s beginning , with Go Home, Afton. I could sit here and go through the entire series with you, but that will have to wait until another review….YES, I said another review! The series has ended, but Brent has released The complete Afton Morrison Series as a whole (instead of in parts). It is available through Amazon as of Monday, October 29th in Kindle format, Paperback and HOLYCOW…Audible!!!!! I want it all…EVERYTHING!!!! So, of course I will be doing a review on the completed set. Also, eventually on Audible.

Anyway….on to Time’s Up, Afton! Afton has gained so much as far as family and friends, people truly care about her. But now so much has been taken away. After the fiery assault on Wakefield, now a low-life gang has infiltrated the town and is dealing bad drugs to teenagers, that are killing them. Afton has reached her limit and she is allowing that inner killer to come out and become that antihero we all knew she was. I found it sad. I didn’t want to see Afton have to let that killer out, but she did. It was a part of her and eventually it was going to happen anyway. Using it to save Wakefield and those she cared about was at least the best way she could do it. I found myself disappointed at times, but understood things had to end up like they did.

The epilogue almost sent me over the edge. Oh Afton!!

5++ FIERY STARS!!! I highly, highly recommend this series!! Which you can now read, either by each part separately (books 1-4 kindle only) or as of October 29th the Complete Set as ONE (Kindle, Paperback, Audible). Whatever your preference!!! But I will say this, Brent Jones is an Amazing writer!!! His thought process is incredible!! Characters are SO INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN!!! His world building is WELL WRITTEN, EASY TO PICTURE AND FOLLOW!!! His books are edited BEAUTIFULLY, and I was reading the ARCs!!! He must have an AMAZING editor!!! So if you’re questioning the Author, DON’T!!! YOU WON’T BE SORRY!!! As for the story…it is a THRILLER…basically a PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER with an antihero, who talks to her Animus (which is the archetype of self, of the unconscious mind). Very intriguing, RIGHT? Yes, I thought so!! If this sounds right up your alley then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! Again 5++ FIERY STARS!!!

My Review: A Distant Voice by Bridie Blake

A Distant Voice

by Bridie Blake

.

8AC7C9EE-1EDA-4907-B780-991B925999BCIn life you don’t find your voice. It finds you.

Violet Hayes knows how to survive the year living with her grandmother in the small town of Wandorah, Tennessee.

• Make Rose happy
• Don’t sing or play guitar
• Avoid Sally Shaw
• Ignore Carter Jenkins

It seems simple enough, right? Wrong.

• How do you keep a depressed sister happy?
• How do you deny yourself your dream?
• How do you avoid a friendship?
• And how do you ignore a boy when he’s everywhere you turn?

Violet’s to-do list just became a whole lot harder.

Excerpt:

He smiled and reached out to pull the guitar toward him. He strummed his fingers over the strings and played a few chords before glancing over at me proudly.

“Impressive.”

He offered me the guitar. “Your turn.”

“And what makes you think I can play?”

“Your bloodlines.”

I snorted out a laugh and clapped my hand over my mouth in horror.

“Play away,” he said, ignoring my snort, and pushed the guitar into my hands.

I stared down at it with my mouth hanging open. The way my heart raced you’d think he’d pulled the pin on a grenade and handed it to me. Relax Violet. It’s an instrument. It can’t hurt you. Unless I tripped over it and broke my neck. And that could happen. Probably not entirely realistic while I’m holding it, but if I dropped it and then got up and tripped, it … oh dear god, what is wrong with me?

His mom called out his name and he gave me an apologetic shrug. “I’ll be right back.”

He left the room and I remained where I was, the guitar still burning my hands. It had been months since I’d played. Months since I’d felt that wave of joy I got whenever my fingers ran over the strings.

A yearning, so strong it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach, washed over me and my fingers moved. They ran over the strings, playing whatever came to mind. I closed my eyes and let myself be swallowed up by it all. I allowed myself to forget and be something else. Someone else.

I didn’t know how long I stayed like that but a shuffle behind me forced me back to reality. I opened my eyes and twisted around. Carter stood in the doorway, a look of wonder on his face and it made me squirm. I dropped my hands, rested the guitar on his bed, and scrambled to my feet. “I should go.”

He moved toward me slowly, as though scared a sudden movement would startle me. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I mumbled and folded my arms across my chest, tucking my hands into my armpits where they’d be safe and wouldn’t stray towards anymore strings.

His brow creased and I saw him trying to work out what had happened but I didn’t want to talk about it. I tried to duck out of his room before he asked me anything. He gripped my arm, stopping my quick exit. “It’s okay,” he said. “You’re allowed to enjoy things. You’re not betraying your sister by having fun or doing the things you want to do.” His voice, filled with sincerity and kindness, caused a lump to take up residence in my throat.

His hand ran along my arm and towards my hidden hand. He tugged on it until he freed it and he squeezed my fingers gently. I shook my head because he’s right, but he’s wrong at the same time. It was guilt over Rose that stopped me doing things but when it came to music, there was so much more to it.

Music destroyed Gran’s life. It ruined Mom’s childhood. I couldn’t love something like that because if I did, I’d open myself up to the same hurt. And I’m not anywhere near as strong as Gran. It would destroy me. It would be my trigger.

I wanted to tell him that. I wanted him to understand. But the words wouldn’t come out of me.

Bridie Blake lives, daydreams and writes in Melbourne, Australia. She’s happiest at her computer, coffee in hand, Tim Tams on standby and her furry companions Poppy and Mac at her feet. When not writing she’s usually found with a book in her hand or playing with her tribe of nieces and nephews.

Bridie is the author of the YA Fantasy novel, THE JEWEL OF KAMARA, and YA contemporary novels A DISTANT VOICE and UNTIL YOU.

.

The “Unofficial” Bio

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. Stories, songs, plays that I made my family perform. I always had a million things running through my mind and nothing has changed the older I’ve gotten. Actually it’s probably gotten worse. I’ve mastered the art of nodding along in conversations and slipping out the occasional ‘yeah’ and ‘mmm’ while constructing conversations and paragraphs in my head. If I stare at you blankly don’t fret. There’s nothing wrong with me, I’m just in one of my writing zones and there’s no helping me at this point! Just back away slowly and touch base with me in a month or so and I should be able to carry a conversation like a normal person. At least until the next writing wave hits.

It took me ten years to finish my first novel, THE JEWEL OF KAMARA, because I kept playing at living in the real world and thought being a writer was no more than a fantasy I shouldn’t indulge. Eventually the pull of my characters became too much that I just had to write the story, and I’ve never looked back. Creating stories is all I’ve ever wanted to do and now I’m doing it (while still playing at being in the real world from 9-5).

“Keeps getting better” – Little Shop of Readers

“Wow! KE Osborn has once again delivered the goods.” – Kay’s Blushing Book Reviews

“This book is an amazing follow up to Resistance and Penance books 1 and 2 of the Chicago Defiance MC Series.” – Goodreads Review

91A46BC0-2FE4-498F-A125-636AFA796574

The books of The Chicago Defiance MC just keep getting better and better! Dear Lord!! Each time I read one, I’m like this is the best MC Romance ever!! But then KE comes along and writes the next one and blows it away.

OK..so Trax is a broken man, he’s so full of anger and violence. We’ve seen this in the last two books. But we never knew the true reason why. Well now we get Trax’s story. Trax had a piece of his heart go missing. She left, disappeared and didn’t come back. Two years have gone by. Now Mylee has returned to Defiance.
Trax and Mylee’s (Sparx) story is not your typical second chance romance. The issues these complex characters have to deal with are heavy. But it so beautiful how they come together and are actually exactly what the other one needs. As Trax says:
“They say that deviance is an absence of conformity to the normal. If you look at me, I was a deviant without Sparx. A vigilante, a man out for vengeance. Sparx, she too was seen as someone not of the ‘norm,’ someone outcast from the social acceptance of the world. So when we deviated toward each other, the things that made us which were frowned upon by others is what actually brought us together.”
I feel as though I could go on and on with this review. KE really outdid herself when she broached the topic of bipolar disorder, of anxiety/panic attacks, and the many phobias and negative thinking that come along with these conditions. There was one point where Mylee (Sparx) was having a panic attack, and being someone who has them, I was right there with her. KE explained the feelings so well. But she also did a really nice job showing how people with bipolar disorder, and other depressive disorders, with the right help and support can go on to lead normal lives. They’ll always have to be aware of their moods and in touch with how they’re feeling and what to do. But it doesn’t mean their life is over. This was a very emotional, but important subject for me, because my sister died a couple years ago from years of living untreated for bipolar. I just had to mention how great I thought KE Osborn handled this. Especially considering there are times when authors don’t do there research.
This book was so emotional, so passionate, so heartwarming, it was great seeing the family unit in the club, the brotherhood, there was suspense and I felt a little sad when it ended. That is…until I turned the page and saw the title and summary for book 4!!! I can’t wait for that one!!!
5+ Sparxling Stars and Highly Recommended, especially if you like MC Romance!!!

MY REVIEW

This is my first Joz Maxel book, and what a wonderful surprise!! It was a little different than I expected, but really good!!
.

Keely had a traumatic experience at a young age that sent her spiraling down the rabbit hole. She got into drugs, drinking and sexually promiscuous. She was finally trying to calm down her lifestyle, working at a new job, when she met Carrick. He was taken by her immediately and tried asking her out. Problem was Keely didn’t do relationships. Carrick doesn’t give up that easy though.

.
The story of Carrick and Keely is so bittersweet. He is so sweet and good to Keely. Not that they don’t go through hard times, but Carrick doesn’t give up easily. I loved him. He was the best!
.
“You are everything to me. When you hurt, I hurt. When you’re happy, I’m happy. When you feel alone in this, I’m right by your side for all of it. You will never feel pain like that again when you’re with me.”
.
This is such a great romance. It’s angsty in a way. But it’s really heartwarming too. I highly recommend it if you love romance! 5 Feel Good Stars!!!

“I brought you out here…”

“Demanded.”

“Fine, demanded you come out here so you couldn’t say no to my plans to take you out.”

She pushes off the car and prowls over until she’s standing toe-to-toe with me.

“Does your plan involve taking me for a ride?”

Fuck, yes.

“Is that what you want?”

The corners of her mouth kick up like she’s losing the battle to stop herself from smiling. From recent experience I know something smart ass is going to pass through those luscious lips.

“I think I like the idea of you taking me for a ride as long as it’s long and hard.” She bites on her tongue and winks.

As she steps around me, I let out the breath I’d been holding, feeling her body so close to mine. I turn around to see she’s already straddled on the bike, patting the seat in front of her.

Running my hands through my already messy auburn hair, I pick up the helmet and offer it to her. “Safety first.”

“You always play safe?” Grabbing the helmet and sliding it on her head, she does the clip under her chin and leans forward on her hands, pushing her tits together.

Fuck me, this girl is going to kill me.

My Review: Tales of Love and Woe: The Complete First Volume by Winter Reid

Tales of Love and Woe: The Complete First Volume

by Winter Reid

094575FF-FE02-4CFD-A9C3-A51B529E315EPut away your magic wands and pumpkins.
These are not sweet, tender fairy tales.

Four flawed heroines.
Four classic tales of love and woe retold for modern times…
Because there’s never been an easy road to happily ever after.

The Lonely Crow—Surrounded by coyotes and unexpected magic, a heartbroken ornithologist becomes the target of a park ranger’s aggressive affection. To survive, she must trust the instincts that failed her so completely once already.

Goose—After a one-night-stand leaves her belly swollen and reputation in tatters, an unemployed gas-station clerk finds herself at the mercy of her lover’s mother. But if her own troubled childhood taught her anything, it’s that she’ll fight to the death to protect her baby, and that love never comes the way we expect.

Rosie Waking—Following her father’s disappearance, a small-town waitress lives wedged under her boss’s thumb until a stranger forces her to view her life through a different lens. Can she decide, once and for all, where loyalty stops and subservience begins?

De Rege’s Laundry—When a mob boss’s desperate daughter makes a deal with the devil, she doesn’t expect a handsome ex-soldier to muck it all up. Suddenly, the woman who’d sworn to sacrifice anything for freedom must choose between escape and losing the one person who cares about her happiness.

Beautiful and atmospheric, Tales of Love & Woe is 110k word collection exploring modern womanhood through twisted retellings of The Little Mermaid, The Golden Goose and The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg, Snow White & Rose Red, and The Twelve Dancing Princesses. While love and kindness are major themes in these stories, the darker sides of human nature are, too. As such, this collection is intended only for a mature audience. After all … fairy tales were meant to be grim.

MY REVIEW

Oh, I am SOOO IN LOVE with this book!! I have even ordered the paperback so I can hug it and stare at it and hug it again….you get my drift. Not to mention that I am going to want to reread this collection of four fairy tale retellings over and over!!

“Put away your magic wands and pumpkins.
These are not sweet, tender fairy tales.

Four flawed heroines.
Four classic tales of love and woe retold for modern times…
Because there’s never been an easy road to happily ever after.”

This was from the summary of the book. Perfectly said. These are not sweet, tender fairy tales. There’s never been an easy road to happily ever after. But that doesn’t mean these fair tales are completely depressing. Like the title, they’re tales of love and woe.

But Winter Reid….can I just say, WOW!!! This is one seriously talented author!!! People, I’m not just saying this!! I want to take her home and make her tuck me in and tell me a story every night when I go to bed!! Her characters are SO RICH and VIBRANT!!! All of them!!! There is SO MUCH to these characters and their lives, their thoughts, what they do, and their motives!! Holy Guacamole, it’s a freakin beautiful thing!!! Her worlds are the same way!! I can picture the scene laid out before me. I’m lost in the story…it’s wonderful!! Then…it’s over….and I’m in a freakin book hangover and I haven’t even finished the book!!! Just ONE of the fairy tales!! This happened to me after each of the FOUR fairy tales!!! I thought I was I was going to die, but I loved it!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!! I would give it 10++ Stars, if there were such a rating!!! I VERY HIGHLY recommended this to ALL!!!!!

Gabby

Looking back, I should have seen the signs. Perhaps I did, but I subconsciously chose to ignore them.

From the time I was ten, when I first met Dylan, I knew he was my forever guy. Back then, I couldn’t put words to what I was feeling, but, as the years progressed, I came to recognize it for what it was—soul-deep love. The kind only very few people ever get to experience. Dylan was more than just my best friend, my childhood sweetheart, my lover.

He was my soulmate.

We were carved from the same whole—destined to be together forever.

Until he changed.

And I believed I was no longer good enough.

Until he shattered me so completely, it felt like I ceased to exist.

And I’d never experienced such heart-crushing pain.

Until he leveled me a second time, and I truly wanted to die.

But I had to stay strong because I wasn’t alone in this cruel twist of fate.

I look to the sky, pleading with the stars, begging someone to tell me what I should do because I don’t know how to deal with this. I don’t know how to cope when my forever has changed, and I can’t help wondering if I had seen the signs earlier, if I’d pushed him, would it have been enough to save us?

Or had fate already decided to alter our forever?

Excerpt:

A throat clearing alerts me to my brother’s presence. My eyes fly to the door, and Ryan is there, lounging against the wall, gaze narrowed as he watches us.

“Morning,” I croak, wincing at how hoarse my voice sounds.

“What the hell’s going on, Gabby? And why is Slate in your bed?”

“Technically, he’s not,” I say, unsuccessfully attempting to extricate myself from his grip.“He’s on top of my bed.”

At that moment, Slater, very unhelpfully, decides to nuzzle into my neck. A satisfied moan slips from his lips, and he blatantly inhales, rubbing his nose in my hair. “Mmm,you smell good,” he murmurs in a sleep-laced tone, pressing his morning wood against my ass. I can’t stop the whimper that escapes my mouth in time, and Ryan turns a very unflattering shade of red. If his jaw clenches any tighter, he’ll give himself lockjaw.

“This is not what it looks like,” I rush to assure him before he loses it.“And nothing happened, so there’s no need to go apeshit on Slate.”

“Someone better start explaining,” Ryan grumbles, and Slater stills behind me, slowly coming to.

“Ryan, dude. Stop freaking out,” Slater says after a tense minute of silence, his voice drenched with sleep.“I was only consoling Belle. That’s it. No need to look at me like you want to rip my head from my body.”

“That’s not the only part of your anatomy I’d like to dismantle right now,” my brother growls, slanting thunderous looks in Slater’s direction.

“Seriously, chill, bro.” Slater scoots away from me, and I instantly feel cold. I lie flat on my back as he swings his legs out the other side of the bed. Resting his elbows on his knees, he yawns. Thank God, he’s wearing a tank and sweats and that he’s hiding the evidence of his arousal until he’s gotten himself under control. The last thing I need is Ryan jumping to conclusions.

Excerpt:

Emma Jean

When I was younger, I fell in love with magic. I learned every card trick there was from library books and unmasking magic TV specials. I used to put on shows for Gabby that included escaping from complicated knots and trick handcuffs. But what’s magic besides a sleight of hand?

It’s a lie.

And lying is what I’m damn good at.

My ability to spin a tall tale or two lead to stealing wallets and conning people into taking stray pets for the thrill of it. Now, I’m using it to earn for Marco. The thrill is there, but it’s muted, hindered, lost under his pile of mounting threats.

The inside of the casino smells like stale cigarettes, spilled beer, and burnt coffee. We’re not supposed to be in here. It’s Bedlam territory. But that’s also why it’s perfect.

It isn’t like anyone would recognize us here.

We’ve made friends with a few of the cocktail waitresses by giving them a small cut, and they don’t ask questions or ring any alarms when they see us working. I’ve also been straightening my hair over the last few years since my crazy curls stand out like a reflector on a dark highway. I’ve dyed it a few shades darker than my normal honey blonde to help blend in.

Tonight is starting off well. Gabby and I are working a con we’ve run a few times before.

Gabby walks away, her long dark hair swooshing behind her. She gives me a nod as she passes me by on the slot machine I’m pretending to play. She’s just faked losing an expensive engagement ring at another slot machine. I watched out of the corner of my eye as she frantically looked around for it, then loudly announced a thousand-dollar reward would be waiting at the casino cage for whoever returned it.

She is flawless. She should be an actress. And in another life, she would be.

But we don’t live in another life.

We live in Lacking and belong to Los Muertos.

Our lives are not our own.

A few people casually look around the area, then return to their machines when they don’t find the ring Gabby was ranting about. They won’t either. Because it’s not there.

Yet.

It’s go time.

I strut over to the area Gabby just left and put a dollar in the machine. While the wheels spin, I pretend to pick up the dime store ring I already have in my hand. By the time the machine dings to tell me I’ve lost my dollar, I’m turning the ring over, inspecting it like I don’t have half a dozen more just like it in my drawer back at the apartment.

“Would you look at that?” I mutter to myself loud enough so others around me can hear.

A man in an Adidas jumpsuit with a potbelly taps me on the shoulder. “I’ll take that. I saw the woman who dropped it. I’ll go return it to her.”

Liar. You just want the reward.

“That’s so nice of you,” I say. I hold it out, about to drop it into his hand when I pull it back. “I bet there’s a reward for something this valuable.” I start to walk around the man. “I’ll take it up to management. Maybe, they know…”

“Here,” the man says, holding up a hundred-dollar bill. “Take this. I’ll take it to her. I just…you know, as I said, I want to make sure it gets back to the right person.”

You’re not even a good liar.

Sometimes, it’s just too freaking easy. And this scam wasn’t even an Emma Jean and Gabby original. We saw it a long time ago in a movie starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. Doesn’t anyone else watch movies?

I shrug and pass him the ring. Plucking the bill from his hand, I tuck it into my bra. “Thanks,” I say before quickly making my way toward the large glass front doors. It’s Thursday. Marco’s money is due in two days, and we’re short this week.

Really short.

I walk slowly and wave goodbye to the valets with a smile on my face. “Any luck, tonight?” One asks me.

“I think so,” I answer with a smile. Once I’m down the sidewalk and out of view, I scramble to the side of the casino where I kick off my heels and change from the sequined dress I’d stolen from a dry-cleaner into a pair of cut-off shorts and my yellow Keds.

Now, all I have to do is wait for Gabby.

I don’t have to wait long.

“Run!” Gabby yells, darting from the doors of the casino with two large men wearing tight black security t-shirts close behind. Running from security is terrifying enough, knowing that we’re running from members of the Bedlam Brotherhood kicks it up a notch.

I grab my backpack and sling it across my shoulders. I move as fast as I can until I’m running right alongside her. We race through the gates, cross the street, narrowly avoiding being hit by two cars. We duck into a hole in a fence and run through one backyard after the other.

“One of those cunt waitresses must have tipped them off!” Gabby says, through shallow breaths. She’s barefoot in a black mini-dress hiked up to her ass to give her long legs room to run. Her long thick hair is wrapped around her face, sticking to her mouth.

We hit the sixth backyard. Without another word, we separate behind a clothesline. We’ve mapped out this escape plan a thousand times, but this is the first time we’ve ever had to use it.

When I make it into the central part of town, to the Los Muertos/Bedlam border, I can no longer hear the shouts of the security guards. I lost them.

Hopefully, Gabby did, too.

I use a tower of stacked-up wooden pallets on the sidewalk like a ladder to scale a concrete wall, then drop down into the alley.

I grow more panic-stricken the longer I wait for Gabby. I bite the inside of my lip, pacing back and forth along the high wall. The Bedlam Brotherhood runs the security at the casino. If they catch her and find out who she is? Or worse? Who her brother is? They’ll… I shake the thought from my mind. She’ll be fine.

She HAS to be fine.

Please be okay, Gabby. Please.

I’m trying to catch my breath and pull myself together when I hear a clink echo through the alley as if someone dropped some spare change, followed by the sound of something heavy dropping to the asphalt.

“Gabby?” I ask into the darkness. Thinking it’s her, relief washes over me like rain on a barren desert.

My only answer is the flickering of a fluorescent light mounted high on the roof’s edge of the adjoining building. And the hiss of what sounds like a cat behind a dumpster.

I walk over and peer around it. “Gabby? Are you hurt? Say something!” I whisper-shout.

Someone moves from within the shadow. “Get out here, Gabby. We’ve got to go before Mar…”

The light flickers again, for just a second. That second is all I need to see that the someone slowly stalking toward me is not Gabby.

It’s a man…twice my size.

“Who are you?” I ask, shuffling backward as the man cloaked in a black leather hood emerges from the shadows. The front of his jacket is open. Underneath, he’s shirtless, covered in a sheen of sweat, and more tattoos than visible skin all the way up the front of his throat. His muscled chest and abs flex with each step he takes. The hood shadows most of his face, but when the lights flicker again, yellow eyes glow from within.

And they’re locked on me.

My ‘save your ass’ mode kicks in.

The man is blocking the only exit. My only other chance of escape is to scale the same wall I used to drop into the alley.

I keep moving backward as he approaches until my back hits the wall. I look left and right for something to use to climb on.

There’s nothing but emptiness.

My stomach sinks, but surrender is not an option.

I swallow hard as the alarm bells scream in my head for me to run. Somewhere. Anywhere.

There’s nowhere to go!

My legs tremble. Fear crawls like a million spiders along the backs of my legs. I push myself further against the wall as if I can squish the feeling away, but it’s useless.

Fear consumes me. Swallows me whole.

He continues toward me. As he gets closer, I realize it’s not just sweat glistening on his skin. There’s something else splattered across the tattoos on his chest and on his stubbled jaw.

It almost looks like wet paint.

My breathing stops when he’s close enough that I can make out the tattoo on the front of his throat.

A bleeding black rose.

The symbol of the Bedlam Brotherhood.

I’ve heard stories about Grim. The man in the hood. The executioner for Bedlam. They were all terrifying, but not nearly as terrifying as the reality of coming face to face with the man himself.

“We didn’t do anything,” I blurt. “I mean, we did, but it wasn’t a big deal. I’ll…I’ll give the money back. Just tell your men not to hurt my friend. It was all my idea. Let her go, and you can take me.”

“Who the fuck are you?” he asks. His voice is so thick and deep I feel it more than hear it. Shivers erupt all over my body.

He raises his arm, revealing a long curved blade.

For the first time in my life, I can’t seem to be able to hide my fear with my wit or sarcasm. My throat tightens. I can’t swallow, never mind speak. I’ve lost my words completely, along with my nerve.

The man’s blade drips red onto the pavement from the serrated tip.

Every fear response I didn’t even know I had runs rampant. I’m holding my breath. My muscles tense as if running was still an option. The hairs on my arms and the back of my neck prickle my skin as they stand on end. I raise up to my tip-toes and push back, trying to make myself disappear into the wall.

I glance from the knife back to his chest, then back again. The splatters across his skin?

It’s not fucking paint.

Before I can process what the hell is happening, he switches from slow-stalking mode into hyper-speed, pinning my wrists above my head. His hard, bloodied chest pushes against me, smearing blood across my white tank top, forcing the back of my head to connect roughly with the wall.

“I’ll only ask you this one more time. Who the fuck are you?” His low guttural growl rattles my bones.

His unblinking, angry, golden eyes lock onto mine. Without the fluorescent light, they’re more golden brown than a glowing yellow. As much as I want to, I can’t look away. He could be the last person I ever see.

The thought is just the spike of adrenaline I need.

“Let me go,” I say, finally finding my words. I try and jerk my wrists from his grip with no luck. I’m trapped. My fear and anger rise to the surface, but I shove it back down. Fear won’t get me out of this situation, so it will have to wait for its damned turn.

He digs his rough fingers into my skin. “Answer me. Who the fuck are you?”

The bite of pain only makes me angrier. I throw his question back at him. “Who the fuck are you?”

He glances down at my rapidly rising and falling chest before pinning me with his stare. The corner of his mouth tugs up in a half-smirk.

“So much confidence for someone who’s trembling,” he says with an amused glint shining in his demonic eyes.

I shrug. “Maybe, I’m just not a fan of enclosed spaces,” I say through gritted teeth.

“You didn’t answer me,” he says.

“Why do you have blood all over you?” I answer him with yet another question. “You know, if you were committing some kind of crime back there, you should be more careful. I recommend a bleach bath and death by fire for your clothes the first chance you get. If it’s self-harm, I’m sure there’s a helpline you can call.”

He cocks his head to the side. His nostrils flare. His face is only inches away. I can feel the heat from his body against mine. His cool breath flutters against my neck.

I’ve never been this close to a man before. My trembling grows. My inner thighs shake sending a rippling wave of something very unfamiliar coursing through the center my body. I try and press my legs together to stop it from happening again, but when he uses his knee to wedge my legs apart, caging me in even further, it only grows, uncoiling from within like a slinky being pulled apart at the ends.

I swallow hard as the stubble of his jaw presses against my neck.

“Name,” he demands, his voice raspier than before.

I shut my eyes tight for a beat, trying to gain composure, control, something that will help me as I try and reason my way out of this. “Listen, I didn’t see anything,” I blurt. “That is if you did anything. I’m not going to call the police if that’s what you’re worried about. I wouldn’t anyway, even if I saw something, which I didn’t.”

His brows knit together in a harsh line. “Why?”

His question confuses me.

“Why what?”

“Why wouldn’t you tell the police?”

Because Marco owns them.

“Let’s just say that I haven’t exactly been a model citizen myself tonight. Let’s face it. If the police around here weren’t being paid not to do their jobs, half this town would be locked up.” I take a deep, shaky breath. “Especially people like us.”

He stills. There’s no more talking. Only heavy breathing and a battle of wills. He releases one of my hands. I think he’s reaching for his knife. My blood turns cold. I can feel my face pale as my heart starts beating as faster and faster as if it wants to get in as many as possible before the end.

I’m surprised when he doesn’t go for his knife. Instead, his hand travels slowly down my chest into my cleavage.

“No, don’t!” I say, but it’s too late, he’s already yanked on my locket.

“Please just give it back, and let me go,” I plead. Feeling like it’s my real heart he’s torn from my chest. “It’s the only thing in this world that means anything to me. Besides my best friend, it’s all I have.”

I hate the desperation in my voice, but it’s the truth.

He’s silent for a moment. He raises his arms. I flinch, raising my arms over my face defensively. But when nothing happens, I lower them, just in time to see him push back his hood, revealing his face.

“Why?” I ask, closing my eyes knowing full well that the only time a criminal reveals himself to a witness is right before they take them out.

“Look at me,” he demands, holding my face in his hand.

“No!” I say, shutting my eyes tighter.

“Look at me!” he bellows. He’s on me again. This time, he holds my head in his large rough hands. “Open your fucking eyes so you can see me.”

With no other choice than to get my head squished like a turtle under a car tire, I do as he demands. Opening my eyes, I blink through the haze, and when it clears, I’m met with tousled, medium-length, light brown hair, slicked back on the top, shorn close to head on the sides. His nose is slightly crooked like it’s been broken a few times before. The stubble on his square, defined jaw is a few days over needing a shave. A jagged scar runs through his chin like an angry white lightning bolt.

He’s the most fucking beautifully terrifying man I’ve ever seen.

He’s searching my eyes for something, but I don’t know what.

“Why?” I ask in a whisper.

His hands release mine, but he doesn’t step back. He leans in closer, speaking against my cheek in a rumble of a whisper. The strange feeling from earlier comes back as a zap of electricity bouncing around my insides looking for somewhere to ground.

I’m breathing heavy. Our lips are so close, almost touching. He slides one hand off my face, snaking it around my neck, pulling me closer. He starts to answer in a rumble of a whisper, causing goosebumps to rise on my already prickled skin. “Because I want you to see the face of the man who’s just—”

“Where the fuck are you?” calls Gabby from the other side of the wall. “I lost them!”

The moment, whatever it is, is now broken. The man releases me so suddenly I brace myself against the wall to keep from falling. I turn my head toward her voice.

“Gabby!” I shout back.

My heart is beating out of control. Out of habit, I raise my hand to my chest, seeking familiar comfort.

I look up. The man in the hood is gone.

And so is my locket.
