Beautiful. Perfect. Dead.
They’re arranged in a particular way. Their faces turned at the most flattering angles, their designer clothes immaculate, as immaculate as their carefully made-up faces. Only the slash of blood across their necks mars the perfect surface. Only the vacant stare in their eyes indicates they’re dead.
The most popular girls in school are going down, and Penelope Malone is terrified she’s next. All the victims so far have been linked to Penelope—and to the mysterious loner boy from her physics class. The one with the lopsided smirk and intense stare that’s almost…cute? Even though she’s not sure she can trust him, she reluctantly agrees to work with him to figure out what’s happening. All while trying to stay one step ahead of the brutal serial killer on the loose.
But this killer won’t be satisfied until every beautiful, popular girl in the senior class is dead—especially Penelope. And the killer is closer than she thinks…

Nyxia by Scott Reintgen

Book Summary:

Emmett Atwater isn’t just leaving Detroit; he’s leaving Earth. Why the Babel Corporation recruited him is a mystery, but the number of zeroes on their contract has him boarding their lightship and hoping to return to Earth with enough money to take care of his family.

Forever.

Before long, Emmett discovers that he is one of ten recruits, all of whom have troubled pasts and are a long way from home. Now each recruit must earn the right to travel down to the planet of Eden—a planet that Babel has kept hidden—where they will mine a substance called Nyxia that has quietly become the most valuable material in the universe.

But Babel’s ship is full of secrets. And Emmett will face the ultimate choice: win the fortune at any cost, or find a way to fight that won’t forever compromise what it means to be human.

My Review:

Nyxia was a really unique book. When I started reading it, I thought a little of hunger games with all the competition. But I soon realized this was its own story and a pretty intense one at times too. Emmett is the main character, and I grew to really like him. He is such a good kid. He came from a good family, and has good values. It is this that makes him outstanding amongst the other kids.

You see Emmett, like the others, was recruited by the Babel Corporation to enter the spaceship going to Eden. Once on the ship they were to compete. There were 10 of them, but only 8 would go to Eden. The competition was designed to prepare them for what they would, or could, go through on Eden. They had technology never seen before to learn to use. The competition got pretty intense. But the rewards of going to Eden meant everything to these kids!!

Some of the kids were ruthless. Some were skilled. Some were plain desperate. And some became like family to each other.

I LOVED reading this book!! It left on a cliffhanger, so I’m hoping it won’t be too long before the next book comes out!!

But, I really do recommend this!! If you like science fiction, with some action/adventure, a bit of a thriller….you’ll LOVE Nyxia!!!!

When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup two months into sophomore year. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex’s frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night – but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Her friends nominate him to be the perfect rebound.

When her attacker turns stalker, Jacqueline has a choice: crumple in defeat or learn to fight back. Lucas remains protective, but he’s hiding secrets of his own. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

“Love is not the absence of logic
but logic examined and recalculated
heated and curved to fit
inside the contours of the heart”

THIS BOOK!!! Oh. Em. Gee.  My friend Literary Dust recommended it to me and I’m sooo glad she did!!

I will warn you of a rape trigger. I don’t want anyone set off by reading this book. There is an attempted rape scene. It isn’t real graphic, it’s just very scary and intense. The message no means no, is an important one.  I was very pleased with the way Tammara Webber handled it.

But this book is so much more than that!! The characters were beautifully written. Jacqueline is the main character and she really grows in this book. She has so much love in her heart, but she has never truly been loved, or treated decently, in her life. Even her parents have a tendency to just take her for granted.  She deserves so much more! She finds that in a boy who is fighting his own demons. She longs to be there for him, but she needs to tread lightly.

Lucas is such a complicated character. He’s very troubled. He sits in the back of class sketching Jacqueline, watching her with his transparent grey eyes. Learning about Lucas was one of the best parts of the book to me. I really enjoyed his character and the mystery of wondering about certain things as layers of his life are peeled back.

“Choosing to be with you isn’t a difficult decision, Jacqueline,” he breathed, pulling back one final time to stare into my eyes. “It’s easy. Incredibly easy.”

Another character I’d like to mention is Erin, Jacqueline’s roommate and friend. Erin proves to be a very loyal and true friend to Jacqueline, plus she is hysterically funny at times, and very overconfident!

“How did you know???
I’m Erin. I know all. ;)”

So, as you can tell, I totally LOVED  this book!!! I highly recommend it!!! And I plan on moving on to book 2, which is in Lucas’ perspective!!😊

Mason and Logan Kade are two brothers who did their own thing. They were rich and expected to attend Samantha’s school, Fallen Crest Academy. They chose public school and now she has to live with them. The problem is that she doesn’t care at all: about them, about her friends, about her cheating boyfriend, or even about her parent’s divorce. But maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe change is a good thing.

*This book contains adult/mature young adult situations.

NOW HERE’S MY THOUGHTS:

Screwed up teens, screwed up parents…lots of angst and drama…I LOVED IT!!! I know…it’s crazy, but it’s like you’re hooked from pretty much page one, at least I was! Sam (Samantha), the mc, was a pretty strong girl. I guess she learned to be, with a mother like she had. Same with Logan and Mason. These kids are all pretty screwed up from their nut job parents. There were a few jaw dropping moments and a few moments where I wanted to scream at characters. You definitely got very wrapped up in the whole thing. But, you never truly get to understand Logan and Mason. I’m sure that’s what we will learn as we read the rest of the series. Plus I noticed there’s a prequel before this one called “Mason” that probably fills things in a little. Plus further down in the series I noticed Logan gets his own book. So we will be getting to know these yummy boys much more as we continue reading the series, which I definitely plan to do! I’m so pumped to have this delicious new series to read!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Blurb:
In the game of life, I was used to being on the losing team. The odds were stacked against me. Tegan’s Team—a mom who tried to control me, a dad who would rather drink then spend time being a father, a lying ex-boyfriend, and fake friends. Like any team however, you have that one shining star that stood out above the rest. For me that star was Emily, my best friend.

I guess life had pity on me the day it gave me a friend that always had my back. Life must have felt extra giving the day it gave me a cheer leader—Mrs. White, my next-door neighbor. She’d been more of a parent to me growing up then my own parents.

And then there was Andrew. He was my shooting star. One that I never saw coming. One that I hoped became mine over the summer of my senior year.

A glimpse into a crystal ball couldn’t have prepared me for that summer, though. The summer where a letter from my mom rocked me to the core. I felt the world shake with every word I read in that letter. By the time I reached the end, my world split wide open swallowing me whole.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters really drew me and I became very invested in their lives. Tegan struggled a lot in her life and felt alone. She would get her feelings out by taking her sketchbook and sketching what she felt, whether good or bad. She had one sketchbook where she kept her private feelings, much like a diary, but sketches. These were the sketches of her soul, you could say. (I just love that title!) She got lost in her sketching, becoming oblivious to the things around her. Much like a musician that gets lost in his music, which is where Andrew comes in. Andrew and Tegan were friends when they were younger. Tegan lives next door to Andrew’s grandmother, who she loves as if she was her own, and Andrew would come with his mother to visit his grandmother and play with Tegan while he was there. They became very close friends. But then one day Andrew stopped coming. No explanations, no goodbyes, he just disappeared. Leaving Tegan alone.

Tegan’s family relationships weren’t good. Her mother tried to control her, and was never happy with her. She always made Tegan feel like she wasn’t good enough. Her father was an alcoholic and, as Tegan felt, he’d rather spend time being drunk than be a good father. She had a lying ex-boyfriend and fake friends. Realizing all of this has caused Tegan to pull away from everyone and everything and choose to isolate herself more and more, even though her best friend Emily begs her not to, saying that by doing so she is only letting them win. But it’s Andrew who really draws Tegan out. He gets her like no one else, and she gets him. They understand each other in ways no one else can and so are able to help each other heal.

I loved the title of this book, it is what initially attracted me to the book. There are a few typos and grammatical errors, not enough that it caused me not to enjoy the book though. But, I do really recommend the book. The errors did not ruin the story for me and, unless you can’t handle any errors, I think you would enjoy this little gem of a book! It really is great!!

(This song and dancing in the rain, both have to do with the story.)

Hushed by Joanne Macgregor

What started out like a funny, humorous read worked its way to a thrilling end. It was really about learning about yourself and how love doesn’t have to mean sacrificing who you are to be with someone else. I love how Romy and Logan grew to become better version of themselves. Also, Romy grows and comes to realize that she has to let go of all the expectations and do what makes her happy, and those who love her will accept and support her. It really is such a beautiful and enchanting read, and the fact that it took place in South Africa was so educational too. The terms and definitions at the end helped fill in a few questions that I wondered about.

If you enjoy retellings, young adult romance and even a book that touches on environmental issues…look no further!! I highly recommend this. You will thoroughly enjoy curling up with this one!!
