My Review
“You die here, you stay here.”

This book was such a wonderful surprise! It went straight into my favorites folder when I was done. It’s a YA, Urban Fantasy, Retelling and what a fantastic story it is!!

Candace Robinson has a very imaginative and creative mind!! I’m always eager to see what she will come up with next! This was very unique! It is a bit creepy, dark, suspenseful, adventurous and there’s a tad bit of romance in there. There are portals in this story, but not time travel. They are stuck in Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault, which is a Glass museum of fairytales. Not your average fairytales, but twisted fairytales. Anyway, they become stuck in the displays and these portals suck them from one display to the next.

The characters are very well written and you really grow to care about them. As they travel through the museum, from one display to the next (Sleepy Hollow, Jack the Ripper, etc), they hope the next portal will lead them home. Each display is vividly written and easy to picture and you can imagine you are there, which makes it all very intense and exciting!!

I highly recommend the Quinsey Wolfe Duet, both books are so awesome, cleverly imagined and written. Grab Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault while it’s on sale!

A modern telling of a classic tale…

This isn’t a typical love story. This is a story of what happens when love is so powerful and all-consuming that it has the ability to destroy everyone involved. It’s definitely not pretty and it’s certainly not a fairytale, but it’s their story and it couldn’t be told any other way.

91A46BC0-2FE4-498F-A125-636AFA796574

This book….it was NOT what I was expecting!!! I knew it was supposed to be a modern spin on Wuthering Heights, of sorts. But…STILL!!! I’m not going to say too much about the story and give too much away. This book is the kind of book to go in reading blind.

This isn’t your normal love story. But it is about dark, twisted love…Obsessive! These characters are very complex. It’s about money, greed, revenge…it’s very angsty, frustrating and intense!!! There’s lots of twists and turns. While the story is mostly about Heath and Catrina, there are many characters that we get to know and have strong feelings about. It’s a very character heavy story, and all the characters are extremely well written!

Speaking of the writing, it was SO well done. Especially with two authors. Nikki Ash and K. Webster wrote seamlessly! It’s beautifully done! I definitely think these two should write together again in the future!!!
.

About K. Webster

K Webster is the author of dozens romance books in many different genres including contemporary romance, historical romance, paranormal romance, and erotic romance. When not spending time with her husband of twelve years and two adorable children, she’s active on social media connecting with her readers.

About Nikki Ash

Nikki Ash resides in South Florida where she is an English teacher and mom by day and a writer by night. When she’s not writing, you can find her with a book in her hand. Reading is like breathing in, writing is like breathing out. – Pam Allyn

My Review: Tales of Love and Woe: The Complete First Volume by Winter Reid

Tales of Love and Woe: The Complete First Volume

by Winter Reid

094575FF-FE02-4CFD-A9C3-A51B529E315EPut away your magic wands and pumpkins.
These are not sweet, tender fairy tales.

Four flawed heroines.
Four classic tales of love and woe retold for modern times…
Because there’s never been an easy road to happily ever after.

The Lonely Crow—Surrounded by coyotes and unexpected magic, a heartbroken ornithologist becomes the target of a park ranger’s aggressive affection. To survive, she must trust the instincts that failed her so completely once already.

Goose—After a one-night-stand leaves her belly swollen and reputation in tatters, an unemployed gas-station clerk finds herself at the mercy of her lover’s mother. But if her own troubled childhood taught her anything, it’s that she’ll fight to the death to protect her baby, and that love never comes the way we expect.

Rosie Waking—Following her father’s disappearance, a small-town waitress lives wedged under her boss’s thumb until a stranger forces her to view her life through a different lens. Can she decide, once and for all, where loyalty stops and subservience begins?

De Rege’s Laundry—When a mob boss’s desperate daughter makes a deal with the devil, she doesn’t expect a handsome ex-soldier to muck it all up. Suddenly, the woman who’d sworn to sacrifice anything for freedom must choose between escape and losing the one person who cares about her happiness.

Beautiful and atmospheric, Tales of Love & Woe is 110k word collection exploring modern womanhood through twisted retellings of The Little Mermaid, The Golden Goose and The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg, Snow White & Rose Red, and The Twelve Dancing Princesses. While love and kindness are major themes in these stories, the darker sides of human nature are, too. As such, this collection is intended only for a mature audience. After all … fairy tales were meant to be grim.

MY REVIEW

Oh, I am SOOO IN LOVE with this book!! I have even ordered the paperback so I can hug it and stare at it and hug it again….you get my drift. Not to mention that I am going to want to reread this collection of four fairy tale retellings over and over!!

“Put away your magic wands and pumpkins.
These are not sweet, tender fairy tales.

Four flawed heroines.
Four classic tales of love and woe retold for modern times…
Because there’s never been an easy road to happily ever after.”

This was from the summary of the book. Perfectly said. These are not sweet, tender fairy tales. There’s never been an easy road to happily ever after. But that doesn’t mean these fair tales are completely depressing. Like the title, they’re tales of love and woe.

But Winter Reid….can I just say, WOW!!! This is one seriously talented author!!! People, I’m not just saying this!! I want to take her home and make her tuck me in and tell me a story every night when I go to bed!! Her characters are SO RICH and VIBRANT!!! All of them!!! There is SO MUCH to these characters and their lives, their thoughts, what they do, and their motives!! Holy Guacamole, it’s a freakin beautiful thing!!! Her worlds are the same way!! I can picture the scene laid out before me. I’m lost in the story…it’s wonderful!! Then…it’s over….and I’m in a freakin book hangover and I haven’t even finished the book!!! Just ONE of the fairy tales!! This happened to me after each of the FOUR fairy tales!!! I thought I was I was going to die, but I loved it!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!! I would give it 10++ Stars, if there were such a rating!!! I VERY HIGHLY recommended this to ALL!!!!!

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:
Maisie
takes Oak Street, which I have always found ironic. The street is lined on both
sides with tall trees, each one reaching toward the other as if longing for
their touch. For a town called Deer Park, I have seen more trees on a street
corner than actual deer. Not. One. Single. Deer.

Suddenly,
Maisie slams on the brakes and my chest strikes hard against the seat belt.
Then I smash back into the seat just as hard. The only thing I can think is,
are my organs still intact? Seriously, they feel like they’re bleeding
profusely.
“What the
hell?” August and I say at the exact same time. Maisie is staring across the
street to the left.
“Look!” she
exclaims.
Now I see
what Maisie is pointing at. Across from us stands an enormous stone building,
unbelievably tall, and its walls are lined with huge rocks all along the base.
Among the rocks, it appears there are absolutely no windows of any kind. The
entrance has an archway that frames one of the tallest wooden doors I have ever
seen. It’s creepily unusual.
“Impossible,”
I breathe.
“This has
never been here before.” August appears flabbergasted.
He’s right.
He’s beyond right. There’s no way this place was just magically built
overnight. Even if it were possible, it’s obviously old. It has to be over a
hundred years old.
“Maybe we never really noticed it before.”
Maisie unbuckles herself and opens the car door, completely taken by the sight
of this building.
I throw my
hands up hysterically and wave my hands around like a lunatic. “Never noticed
it before? This giant stone mansion?”
“Perrie has
a point, Maisie.” August stares up at the building in shock.
Hesitantly,
I step out of the car and August follows. We walk around to stand beside
Maisie,
completely
speechless as we continue our staring marathon at the place. It’s really an
unusual structure to be sitting in the middle of our town. One would think
something like this would have drawn major attention from the locals.
“We should
investigate!” Maisie is moving before either of us can protest.
“Just a
quick look,” I say, falling into step beside her, fingers itching with
curiosity.
We walk to
the door at a leisurely pace, as if we have all night to see what’s going on.
As we inch closer to the arched doorway, where overgrown grass meets a block of
cement, two things pop into my line of sight. First, there’s a plaque on the
door that reads:
Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault
It’s
written in an elegant, yet outdated script.
Maisie
tilts her head to the side, skeptical of the plaque. “Not sure what a glass
vault is.”
I point at
a sign to the right of the door. Moving closer to see what it says, I read it
aloud:
The illustrious Quinsey Wolfe presents a wonder of the world, a true
sight to behold in his infamous glass museum. A forewarning to onlookers and
wonderers, beware of your imagination and curiosity. This is not for the faint
of heart.

MY REVIEW

(June 2018)
So this is a reread of a reread of a read. Ha! I love this book, have since the first time around (see below). But Candace went through and polished it up a bit, and she did a very nice job of it! So it’s now STILL the SAME story I loved, but just polished up. Well done! I can’t recommend it enough! This story is a lot of fun!

Every Christmas Eve, the Stahlbaum family hosts the most lavish Christmas party in St. Petersburg. For Clara Stahlbaum, it’s an end to a chapter of her life and a beginning of another. Her father wishes for her to marry Viscount Yakov Petryaey, a well-admired member of the Russian court.

When her Great Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives for the party, he brings his handsome, Anton Vasiliev, and Clara’s old childhood toy—the Nutcracker. The return of this relic causes her to remember the magical dream she shared with it as a child, swept away to an enchanted world of the land of sweets and meeting the delightful friends of the Nutcracker Prince. As the magic begins to unfold again, her Nutcracker comes to life and they are faced to fight the lurking Mouse King and his followers. Escaping once more into the realm of WinterDream, the Nutcracker Prince reveals that the world is under a curse, and the Mouse King is determined to have WinterDream for himself. The Prince must break his own curse to win back his kingdom, which can only be achieved by falling in love with a human girl. They travel to his castle in hopes to gain the help of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Irina, in defeating the evil coming their way.

Yet, the more time she spends in WinterDream, the more Clara discovers the Mouse King is not who he seems to be…and neither is anyone else. Before you read the next paragraph, keep in mind that I gave this book a 4/5 star rating. So be sure to continue on to the last paragraph.

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I like dark romance. But this was a bit much for me. This was a dark fairytale, very erotic, dirty and sexy. These five wolves/men forced Red into submission through sex, through punishment and humiliation. I guess it’s the way it would be done in the animal world. But the whole 145 pages was pretty much sex! There was the darkness that wolves had to fight, and the villagers who were basically not nice to Red. It just really wasn’t my kind of book at all.

BUT after saying all that. It was well written for the kind of book it was. I can’t really give a book a bad rating just because it didn’t fit my style of reading, that wouldn’t be fair to the authors. If this kind of book is right up your alley, then I recommend it. It’s short, but a well written story. And I really liked the ending!
