Blackness. Nothingness. It was in the shape of a giant, hazy shadow, enveloping me, swallowing me, and digesting me into the unknown. It was my biggest fear and my ultimate fate.

Shy, thirteen-year-old Zylia has always known she was different. Most teenagers feel unnoticed and unseen, but for Zylia, it’s something much worse. She’s disappearing from this world and doesn’t know how to stop it. At times, she’s not sure she wants to. Until she stumbles across a family mystery surrounding the disappearance of her great-aunt Angelica years earlier. “Grandmother looked up just then, staring right into my face with those unblinking, birdlike eyes, and said, “Angelica, is that you?”

I tried to answer her, but my mouth wouldn’t even open. Besides, what would I have said if my voice were to have worked?

“Answer me, you. Why are you always hiding from me?” She was peering so intently that the beam of her vision was surely searing my skin.

The feeling of being watched had always been a phobia of mine, the curse of someone who is used to being invisible. Icy terror washed over me, although I wasn’t sure why. I was only sitting in the cabinetry, but if I hadn’t known any better, it felt like I was being caught in the act of murder, knowing my punishment would be the end of my freedom and life.”

“I have always known that I am invisible—I had no idea that eventually I would fade away completely.”

THIS BOOK!!!! It deserves so many shiny stars, and hearts and a nice big trophy! Misty Mount is such an enormously talented writer! The way she was able to develop Zylia Moss’ world and the characters in it, all through just Zylia’s eyes was AMAZING!!! The characters were very well developed. I felt I knew each character well, and the ones that Zylia was closest too…like her sister, Ivy, and her best friend, Terra…I felt that I knew them the best, aside from Zylia of course. Her house, with its many rooms and floors. Her school. Her best friend, Terra’s house, and her dad’s DIY projects leaving the house always array. I could picture these places so well when reading the book. All described through only Zylia’s voice. This is pure gold to me! I love a book where things truly come to life for me. Where I can really picture the people and places, and what is going on, in my head. It makes feel like I have left my world and stepped in to the author’s world for a while, and I can vividly see my surroundings and the people. Books like these are the ones that I go to bed and end up dreaming about afterward, that’s how deeply it affects me.

Zylia has low self-esteem, she’s socially inept, she’s shy, clumsy and very awkward. When she is put in a situation she can’t handle she flies into an anxiety/panic attack. I found it so curious that someone from such a large family would have this problem, but I don’t know, maybe that’s the problem. Maybe being in a large family it’s easy to get lost, ignored, and when you’re a sensitive young child you might develop low self-esteem from that. So, Zylia has retreated and drawn into herself. She has done so much so that many people don’t notice her, even when she right there in the same room with them. She can’t seem to speak up for herself at all, not even to ask for them to pass the mashed potatoes at the family dinner table. She tries, but all the comes out is a whisper. But when you have the parents and six children at the table, the conversation gets pretty loud. So poor Zylia ends up with the last tiny bits of mashed potatoes left in the bowl by the time it gets to her. It’s the same at school and trying to speak up in school or talk to other kids, either a whisper or nothing comes out. If they even notice her, they never hear her. Poor Zylia.

But now, Zylia starts to physically fade away. She’s actually disappearing. I won’t tell you anymore, because you need to read the book to learn the mystery of it all. But you will love it. You’ll love sweet Zylia and her good heart. You will love Zylia’s world, her best friend, her family and more. I don’t want to say too much. But, I will say this! If there were Academy Awards for Authors, I feel that Misty Mount would definitely deserve one!! She is a phenomenal writer!!! I don’t think I have ever read “first person” done SO well!! This is definitely going into my favorites of 2018!!

I recommend you read this NOW!! It’s YA Fantasy/Coming of Age, but you could really add so much more to that label!!!

Excerpt:

“That car is still trailing us.”

Glancing in the side mirror, I see that the car is behind us. Cass chooses that moment to take a curve extra fast, making the tires squeal, and I gasp. “You’re scaring me,” I murmur. It feels like my heart just flew into my throat.

“Just wait. What I really want to do is going to scare you even more,” he says cryptically.
“What do you want to do?”

“You’ll have to trust me on this.”

“Okay.” I clamp my lips shut. I shouldn’t automatically agree, right? I’m still having trust issues, even though I’d never say that out loud. This entire day has been confusing. I don’t know who to believe anymore.

“No demanding we back out once we commit,” he says, his gaze never wavering from the road. “That’s a surefire way to get ourselves hurt.”

His words are ominous. Like a warning. “Fine. I’m all in.”

He eases up on the gas pedal, just the slightest bit. The car slows, the vehicle behind us drawing closer. So close I swear it looks like it’s going to eat the back bumper. “I don’t want you to freak out.”

“Oh my God, Cass.” Why is he slowing down? “Just tell me.”

“You have to promise me one thing first.” His gaze meets mine, lingering a moment too long. He should be watching the road, not staring at me. “Say you’ll promise.”

“I promise,” I readily agree, frowning. “But what am I promising?”

He’s staring straight ahead once more, his fingers sliding over the steering wheel, almost like a caress. “You can’t scream.”

What?

“I mean it. No screaming. No yelling. You must remain quiet. I need you to trust me, Pen.” He hesitates, his voice dropping lower. “Do you trust me?”

Do I? He’s already asked me once and I said yes, but the doubt still creeps in. He scares me a little. He also—God, I am so ridiculous thinking this, but—he turns me on. He does. There’s something about him. He has this edge that other boys don’t have. And when he touches me, kisses me…

I’d probably do just about anything he asks me to.

So how can I doubt him when we’ve already gone this far together?

“I won’t scream,” I tell him quietly. “And I won’t yell. I promise.”

“Okay.” He nods once, then hisses out a breath between his teeth. I chance a glance at him, the way his dark hair falls over his forehead, how he’s squinting his eyes. What he’s about to do, what’s about to happen, feels…dangerous. “Here it goes.”

With a flick of his wrist he turns the car’s headlights off. Like, completely off. The road goes dark. I suck in a breath, hold it until I feel like it’s choking me. He hits the gas pedal hard, the SUV roaring to life as he flies down the road. A dangerous, winding road where multiple car crashes occur every year. The windows are down, the wind blows through my hair, blasts against my face, and I close my eyes.

I’m scared, and I can’t make a sound. Not a peep. I hold onto the handle right above the window, gripping it with both hands as Cass takes the twisty road with ease. My gaze is trained on the side mirror and I watch for the car lights behind us.
They’re still there.

MY THOUGHTS:

In reviews, I read Pretty Dead Girls was described as being like the TV shows Pretty Little Liars and Scream Queens. It’s labeled as a Young Adult thriller. Personally I feel it should’ve been labeled a little differently. It is a Young Adult Thriller, NOT to be confused with Horror, but just as much suspenseful, mystery and romantic, in fact the romance plays a big part. Reminding me much of some of those Slasher movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer or Scream. In fact, I would say more like those movies than Pretty Little Liars. But, I would agree that it is comparable to Scream Queens. It definitely has that group of mean girls. It definitely was the kind of book I had trouble putting down. Many of my horror friends will likely find it a joke, as they do many books that I find to be adequately scary, a thrill or suspenseful. Lol…yep, make fun of me now. Lol

Anyway, I loved this book, I found myself glued to the pages trying to figure out the mystery of who it is (I love mysteries) and of course I love romance, and I really enjoyed that part of it (even if I didn’t always trust him). The characters were very well written. I hated the mean girls. Loved Penelope, the main protagonist. I suspected so many people. I was on and off about certain characters, one minute I trusted them, the next minute I didn’t. (Trying not to give away too much) But it was just fun! I love books that make me think, reason, analyze and try to guess before the book ends. I haven’t been reading that many mysteries this year, and this book made me remember how much I love a good Suspense/Mystery/Romance….I’m not asking for too much, am I? Lol

I recommend this highly for someone who likes Young Adult, Thrillers, Suspense, Mystery and Romance. Oh and may like the show Scream Queens or the slasher movies, Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer (there’s a good amount of slashing and blood). If that’s your thing, you will probably really enjoy this book!! I know I did!!

My Review

This book was labeled as a YA Paranormal Romance, but really it is SO MUCH more than that! It is a YA Paranormal Romance, Mystery, Suspense & Thriller. There’s just so much going on. There are so many mysteries, unanswered questions from the past in this town. When Rain comes to live with his Aunt Ruby he starts to look for answers, especially about his father. The more he looks for answers, the more mysteries he stumbles upon. He meets Freddie and is immediately drawn to her, but it’s complicated.

The characters in this book are so great!! I would love for there to be follow up stories on some of these characters! My favorite character was Petra, and I would love to see more written about her life. If you read the book, you’ll see what I mean! These characters need to go further. A series would be awesome!!

This book was such a cleverly constructed book. It starts out pulling at the heartstrings and more of a paranormal romance, but gradually becomes something of such substance that puts its hooks into you, so that you don’t want to put it down. It has characters that have truly unique quirks and personalities, some are “Watchers” and some are “Weavers” and some are human…but they are all such an intricate part of the story.

I loved this. It is definitely one of my favorites of 2017. Mary Lindsey will be a new author I keep my eye on for sure! I highly recommend this, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

A magical circus…

This was a fun read! I’ve never read anything about the circus and wasn’t sure I’d like it. But Sarah Noffke created a wonderful world of fantasy and circus acts. This is my second book from this author and I WANT MORE! She is very generous in developing characters, and there are quite a few in this book. Her characters really come alive on the page and she gives them depth, making us really connect with them. I will warn you though, be prepared to read book two right away. This one ends abruptly at a point where you’re yelling “No, but what happens to….” At least the whole series is already available.

Definitely a 5 star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
